my brakes are locked up

i drive a 94z 28. front ls1 brakes and rotors. stock rear brakes and rotors.

i was driving home last night and i started to hear scratching of metal against metal.

i pulled over and realized that my front brakes were rubbing against the rotors.

i tried to get home, and then i realized that my rear brakes had engaged too.

all 4 of my disc brakes are engaged and wont release.

the fluid level is fine.

just a few days ago, i had all the brake pads changed.

i pulled the emergency brake handle up and then pushed it down, because i thought it might be stuck somehow, but that didnt help.

any insight would be appreciated.

shokor

One thought is that if the rubber brake hoses get pinched, the pads won't 'retract' properly.. and you won't actually see the pinch in the inner hose[this often happens if you hang the caliper by hose]
Who did the brakes?
Maybe they did something wrong..

if all 4 of your brake calipers are siezed applied, then there's pretty much only one possibility. someone put the wrong fluid in your brake master cylinder and that causes the rubber parts in the brakes to swell and apply the brakes. take a look in the master cyl. for cloudy fluid. usually it will look like two kinds of fluids swirled in there, cause they wont mix. it should be clean and clear fluid w/no spots or clouds.
did a shop do your brake job, or did you do it? if a shop did it, and there is contamination in the fluid (ie. wrong fluid mixed in) they should replace EVERY part in your brake system w/a new one. and flush out all the metal lines.

good luck though

well, here's what we found out today:

the front passanger side caliper is the one that wont release.

we jacked the car up and the others wheels turn, but not that one.

i upgraded to ls1 calipers last year and havent had trouble...till now.

i'm gonna replace the two front calipers.

the caliper probably just seized. If moisture gets in your brake line it will be the end of that caliper. Rebuild it or get a new one

glad to hear its just one wheel thats stuck, not all 4 like you thought earlier.

well, if you dont know how to do it, just buy a rebuilt one instead of a new one. it will have a longer warranty. it may be the line there like someone else suggested. here's how you find out. break the bleeder loose on that caliper. a little fluid will come out either way, but if the line is bad, causeing the brake to stay applied, then you will be able to pry/squeeze the piston in. if the caliper is seized, the piston will not go back in at all or will be VERY hard to push back in. hopefully its just a line. if it is, then upgrade to braided lines while you have to do it anyways.

you know, a few days before that caliper froze (right after the brake pad was changed), i noticed there was some smoke coming from the brake...i thought maybe some brake fluid had spilled on it, so i didnt think much of it.

could that have been a foreshadowing?

alright, here's what's new:

the new caliper is smoking like the last one did before it went bad.. it turns out that the brake line has clogged up, and that's what ruined the last caliper...so, i have to change the brake line to prevent another loss.

The rubber line?
When they get pinched/kinked, you can't tell from the outside, but it doesn't allow the pads to retract..
Glad you found it..
Don't drive it like that, or you'll need rotors too...

yah, i'm glad it got figured out finally.

hopefully, this thread will help some of you other folks troubleshoot ur problem...should you ever have it.

on yeah, if the line is clogged, you'll definately smell it, cause it smells like burned plastic...even when driving with the windows rolled down.
