Stock intermediate pipe is 2.75" and most aftermarkets are 3"

If you are running the stock I-pipe you can still install the 3" muffler. I installed my stock muffler on my brother's 3.4L Camaro. I don't recall his I-pipe size but was a bit on the dinky side You can pick up reducers but I just slit the inlet to the muffler, use plenty of high temp RTV, and a good band clamp. It sealed up just fine and didn't cost me anything. If you're looking for improved performance I do think the stock, compression bent, I-pipe needs to go.

This isn't really something I'd personally take to a muffler shop... a muffler install's simple!

Thats all fine and dandy until you decide you want/need another muffler or need to drop the gas tank. Why can't you get a muffler to seal without welding

The muffler connections don't have to be completely leak free. Only enough to not make noise. Believe me, there is no danger from fumes if you can't hear the escaping gas and there is no problem with oxygen intrusion behind the cats. The OEM I-pipe (mandrel bent, BTW) has a Torca slip fit that is not leak free, but it is leak free enough to not make noise. You don't need to weld the pipes at the rear unless you want to make sure they never go anywhere. Buttercup has an excellent point about needing to remove the pipes.
