MSD Opti worth the money??

im in need of a new opti badly. was just wondering if you guys thought it was worth the money to buy an MSD opti for $500 or just get an OEM for half the price?

1st vote for oem

ive, always been told to go with the oem, because they work and have less bugs than msd, accel ect. But i cant give first hand experiance on the msd cause I only have a oem. And i have not had a single problem with it.

If the MSD was twice as good as the GM unit, it might be worth it. So far, I have not seen any indications that it is.

NO WAY $500 is just too much.

There have been several complaints involving the MSD unit that would be enough to steer me away from it. I would just stick with a Delco replacement.

thanks guys, thats what i wanted to hear...money situation opts for OEM, but if the MSD was worth it i was going to pay the extra but looks like no need to do that.

MSD Opti's can be had for significantly less than $500.00. The OEM optis for the 95's and up seem to be quite a bit cheaper than the OEM's for the 93's & 94's. At least based on the prices I've seen quoted. If my car had a vented opti, I probably wouldn't be considering an aftermarket alternative.

$500 up front yes, but they will rebuild them if they go out for $25, am I wrong? If so, it's a good deal.

Actually, I'm one of those people who thinks it would be worth it at twice the price! After going through 3 optis (2 reman., 1 gm) in about 20,000 miles in my '93. I needed something that could deal with all the rain, and not cause the car to misfire/shutdown and eventually destroy itself. My car only has 90,708 miles as of yesterday...

The MSD unit works great for me, I installed it myself and it looks to be a much higher quality piece! I bought mine when they came out last year, and I've been driving on it since. It made turned my camaro from a unreliable junker to a smooth revving cruiser(that I could drive year round, if I needed to)

If you had a vented GM Opti, I'm sure you would have had some better luck as well. I still have the original one with almost 100K on the clock. It'll probably get retired once I finally get around to the heads/cam project in the near future.

I can only speak for myself, but I wouldn't put one on my car if it were free.
