MSD opti timing screw direction...

Anyone know for sure which direction you turn the screw to retard the timing? Clockwise or counter clockwise? I've been searching and googling for hours to get a definite answer and keep coming up with conflicting responses (even from msd techs supposedly).

What i have heard is it doesn't work so most leave it alone and don't mess with it.

Re: MSD opti timing screw direction...

You have two choices. Buy a degreed damper with keyed hub install them and fabricate a pointer, then hope it actually works now that you could monitor what you are doing to the timing.

Or you could take that thing off of there and put a stock one on.

If you start turning the screw with no means of monitoring what you are doing you will cause problems and probably break the distributor when you turn too far.

I never saw the point of the adjustable timing on them. I mean the way a stock setup is you can do pretty much whatever you want through tuning.

Re: MSD opti timing screw direction...

Yes yes yes we can go on all day about how poinless the timing screw is on this unit. The fact is I got a deal on it, bought it and it's working fine. I don't intend to do any major timing changes with and until I can get to a dyno to properly adjust the timing I just want to make the SES light go away. If all I have to do to do that is back the timing off from where it was set from the factory (which according to msd is the case) then so be it.

So back to my very simple question... which direction is retard?

Re: MSD opti timing screw direction...

I have an MSD opti on my motor and had no problems with it,timing was fine...I would think it would be counter clockwise.

I am saying don't screw with it unless you have means to monitor what you are doing.

Also don't screw with it on the dyno, changing the whole curve is not how you dyno tune, changing parts of the curve is which is why you need to go into the pcm.

Re: MSD opti timing screw direction...

You will be offsetting the Opti with respect to the cam, rendering the cam position sensor inaccurate.

Are you sure you didn't just knock the CKP sensor wire loose?

Pretty sure, visibly its connected and secure. Even disconnected it and reconnected it to make sure. Besides, even if that was the case the car would being giveing me a P0335 code, not P0336.
