Yes you can do it with the motor in. I would do a test to make sure the other side isn't losing compression and if not then I would only do one as long as you are using the same gasket

Re: replacing head gasket

Can aynyone walk me through how to pull the heads while engine is in the car? I am thinking maybe I should do both while I'm at it. Just a question here: Has anyone ever used therma gasket or steel seal?

I'd go ahead and do both sides while you are in there. I mean you already have the intake off and everything. The kit you get will probably come with both head gaskets anyways.

Re: replacing head gasket

Drain the coolant from the block and radiator. Unbolt the accessories and brackets from the block/heads. Remove the air pump and coil / icm. Remove the intake manifold. Remove the valve covers, rocker arms and pushrods making sure you organize them in a manner which will allow you to reinstall them in the same spot they were removed from. Remove the exhaust manifolds. Disconnect the ground connections on the back of the heads. Unbolt the heads following the proper sequence and lift off.

It's easier said then done but that'll get you started in the right direction.

Re: replacing head gasket

The best gasket Is either felpro or MLS gaskets but those are more for people with porting done on their heads as it can be a custom made gasket set. Its a really thick gasket but it works.

Re: replacing head gasket

I would sooner use a junkyard engine than a budget rebuild or "budget performance" engine. If it is having head gasket troubles that should tell you the work is questionable, probably all of the work.
