MSD Ignition all hype or must have mod??
MSD Ignition all hype or must have mod??
I went into ram chargers and they got all hyped up about getting a MSD ignition after seeing there display that showed the difference between the little park That they say I currently have and a big *** lighting bolt that the msd produce… and a bunch of hoopla about how my car at 8k rpm don’t produce as much spark as the MSD ignition at 2k rpm. Is this all hype or is it true.. Do you see a differences? And I'm sure many of you have it what's the main benefit of this device..
and what's you hp gain
oh I have a 94 camaro z28 by the way...

Re: MSD Ignition all hype or must have mod??
Well he's telling the truth partially, but it seems intentionally misleading. The MSD box produces multiple sparks (2 or 3, I forget) instead of just one, but only below 3000 rpm (supposedly for better burn and emissions). Above 3000 rpm there's not enough time to fire the plug 3 times, so it fires just once. I'm not so sure that the high rpm spark is much better than what you get from the stock ignition system. As far as I know, the MSD box is like a capacitor, and it builds up a charge, but it's still going through the stock coil. Maybe someone knows more about that. I had a 6AL box, but mainly just for the soft rev limiter feature.
Re: MSD Ignition all hype or must have mod??
It was a noticeable improvement on the '62 Ponitac and the '68 VW but I don't see it doing much for me on a 90's car. Ignitions have come a long way-one possible exception is if you need the limiter or retard because of boost.
Re: MSD Ignition all hype or must have mod??
I installed a digital 6 box into my buddies sprayed LT1. It cuts spark instead of fuel at the limiter so the car wouldn't run lean if the window switch failed (also MSD). It works well, for this application.

I have a Crane Hi-6 box and Mallory magnetic breakerless distributor on my Firebird. I don't know if it made any more power, but it did make it run smoother.
Re: MSD Ignition all hype or must have mod??
It's awesome when you're running nitrous, because you can retard your timing and set your redline with a spark cut off whenever you want it.
I don't see any other reason to own it?
