Question MSD 6AL does it really hurt the opti?

I am thinking about installing one my 94 Z, but I have done some searches and gotten mixed results. Does it cause accelerated wear on the opti? Just wanted to know everyones feelings on them I had one on an 85 carb'd Camaro and it never gave me a problem, wasn't sure on this one though. I didn't really want to replace the opti every year or something.

Ive had mine on my car for a while with the coil and their wires with no problems at all. I also used the msd harness.

Nobody knows if it contributes to opti death. But it's reasonable to think it might, so the smart move is to not use it unless you need it. Hardly anybody on here needs it.

I don't really see a point in getting one, its not going to make you anymore power.

Its not a gotta have mod. If I were you I'd spend the money on some 1.6RR and some LT headers.

Would it be worth getting a 6a if I could get it for 60$? Or just kinda a waste of $?

You could get it if you want to. It doesnt really matter, i guess its purely personal opinion. The only thing i can say is you get it and install it, its not gonna fry your opti the next day.It sure looks cool under the hood though

IMO, it does not hurt the opti. I have been running one for many years/miles. I only installed it because I already had it, though.

IMO ignition upgrades are best left till spray or boost puts more demand on the ignition system. By the time the LT1s were sold the OEMs were doing a lot ot get good emmisions and idle out of cars and part of that was good ignitions. Not that the stock system is perfect it just leaves a lot less room for improvement than the 80s stuff did.

Re: MSD 6AL does it really hurt the opti?

I don't think it would hurt anything. But if you wan't an explanation to the theory: The aftermarket ignition may be able to produce a stronger electrical charge than the opti is able to deliver to the spark plug. The standing charge has no where to go so it can cause corrosion in the opti or fry things if strong enough. I don't think its that strong that it would cause a problem though maybe long term.

Thanks guys for all the responses to my question, I'll probably end up putting one on. Like I said I had one on my old ride and I will always worry about it, kinda like "peace of mind."

The only thing I've tracked is accelerated wear of the pins in the cap.
