motor removal

motor removal

how hard is it to get teh motor out the bottom of the car? can someone walk me through it i figured it would be easier to drop it to put headers and a cam in then to try to do it inside the tight space under the hood .

I've never done it but I'm sure it easier than removing it from the top. I've removed my from the top.. but only because I already had the tranny out.

As far as procedure.. I think you just unbolt the K-member, and the strut tower nuts..

This topic comes up quite a bit. Large debate about it...

I like going out the top because my shop is small and I can roll the car back outside once the motor is out...

If you're doing it in your garage it's not the easiest unless you have a nice jack and some huge jack stands. i took mine out through the bottom...it took me and a buddy about 45 minutes after we had everything disconnected. If i were you though i would probably do it with the motor in. its really not that bad once you start pulling stuff apart. If you do decide to drop it out the bottom have someone there to guide the motor out with you

I know you said you are going from the bottom but i figured id put my input in. I pulled mine from the top effortlessly. As long as you have the patience to remove the fans,radiator,water pump, pulleys, etc.. its not a problem. Just my 2 cents!

Yeah, doing the cam and headers would be easier (at least for access) once it is out, but IMO it's not worth extra hassle of removing it (whether the bottom or the top).

i would just leave it in if i were you...it's much easier to pull off the accesories then to drop the motor

I wanted plenty of room for my cam swap....so I pulled mine....but it is not my primary vehicle either. I also replaced opti, water pump, hoses, clutch, etc.

I did mine out the bottom by myself and loved it! However, I had several projects to do that almost required me to pull motor and trans. While out I had the trans rebuilt, took care of the intake manifold leak and removed EGR and Air Pump. Also did plugs wires and headers. It was a breeze putting it in but this is what I had.

The table the assembly is on is a hydraulic table from Harbor Freight that I could raise and lower and I have a mid-height full car lift from some place in Indianapolis, IN.

Can this topic be made a sticky with the links to the pages with instructions listed? I searched and found the info when I did my engine but it would make it easier on all of us since it comes up a couple times each week.

Jeff, I used your excellent writeup in my engine removal. I printed pictures and text then put them in plastic protectors and put them in a notebook, I kept by my side while working. I didn't follow everything verbatim but I did follow pretty closely. Thanks for the detailed write-up.
