Re: Motor Question.....

May want to consider beefing up the front springs to compensate for the extra weight of the cast iron heads.

Re: Motor Question.....

You need to swap the damper hub because the accessory depth is different.

Exhaust manifolds is correct.
I assume the f-bodies have a functional oil pressure gauge, if so then yes the oil pressure sender.
Swapping the cam would be stupid seeing as in bolton form both engines make the same peak but the b-body motor starts it's torque curve much sooner.

Far as weight, it is about 45 lbs which on a 3500lbs car is 1.3% weight increase, not a big deal. If this is a modified vehicle and you leave off the AIR system(common) and put headers on you would offset probably half that.

the b-body got the same vented opti 94-96 the f-body and Vette did not get the opti upgraded to vented till 95 so you have the same opti.

Re: Motor Question.....

The heads may weigh more, what, like 75 lbs?, but they flowed better than the aluminum ones, not to mention more durable- which is why they were used on the "severe service" police package. Tuned for torque, if you swapped the whole engine you wouldn't have to worry about the cam drive for the opti- The B-body cars got the upgraded one from the start.

Re: Motor Question.....

I actually weighed the heads once and the difference was 45-47lbs for the pair.
I posted the results here a LONG time ago, probably back in 2006 when I was getting ready to do my first heads/cam setup.

Re: Motor Question.....

Cool thanks guys. Sounds like I might be better off finding a direct replacement.

Re: Motor Question.....

sounds like its a pretty straight over swap I think Fred was just making a suggestion on the springs everything else you need will most likely be on your existing motor.

Re: Motor Question.....

f-body guys don't like b-body motors, it is snobbery rather than fact based.

What about the feedback sofar is scaring you off?

b-body motors are a bit more likely to be well cared for too. They tend to be a fair bit cheaper as well.

Thats what I was thinking "Taking care of".

I was going to pay $500 labor to put a new clutch in, but the car was overheated and is making a clicking/ Knocking sound that comes in when the motor is warmed up and increases with engine speed. I drove the car down the street and oil pressure droppped and the car died. It started after a few minutes and thats when the knocking started. Oil pressure has been fine since but with 163K on the ticker I'm thinking of spending the money + a few to drop in a used motor and put the clutch and motor in myself. My thought is to buy a motor for $600-$900 put it in to get me up and running and take the old motor out and attempt my first rebuild taking my time.

While I have some mechanic ability and have been reading everything I can get my hands on, I need it to as easy as possible. The Impala motor is supposed to have been well taking of with 90k miles.

Re: Motor Question.....

Also understand that the Impala motor was the same as the Roadmaster, Fleetwood and the optional LT1 in the Caprice(standard was a 4.3L V8) so don't pay a premium for an Impala motor. Check something like car-part.com and see what is around. 94 b-bodies have the vented timing cover and opti so you can just as easily use one of those and if you found a 96 the differences are easy to deal with.

No way I would pay $900 for a 90K mile LT1, I live near Green Bay and have bought two LT1s out of junkyards with 40-50K on them for $500 and $550, some areas you might pay more but even in a high priced area IMO $700 would still be a lot for that motor. Then again it isn't worth paying shipping to "save" on purchase price so just look at your options before deciding.

I would be willing to pay more for an f-body motor with 643 or 374 casting heads as those are desirable cores for porting, maybe a couple hundred dollars more.

With looking at a clutch change anyway you were going to be having the flywheel resurfaced, so the "con" of having to swap the flexplate is just really reaching for an excuse to dislike the b-body motor.

Cool thanks, I have no problem putting whatever motor in. I'll keep looking for the best deal then go from there. Thanks for the input.

Re: Motor Question.....

Figure I would drop in a mild cam along with a set of headers before I drop it in.
