Smile Motor Building

Ive got a 93 Firebird V8 Formula its a 6spd. Well Im fixing to pull the motor out and rebuild it and I want to put about 425hp to the crank. I know I do not want to bore the block. I was thinking maybe cam, lifters, pushrods, rockers, some head work and some porting. Can yall help me out a little?

well, you can get it close w/o porting the heads. MADZ28 got 348RWHP out of his cam/bolt on car, which is prolly just under 400. but if you go ported heads, I would either do it yourself (like me) or send them to Lloyd Elliot. everyone seems to make great numbers with his heads. just search on heads and cam you can read for hours Im sure.
BTW, if your not rebuilding the short block, dont bother pulling the whole engine. its not necessary. (SP?)

I'd pick your cam based on your head flow numbers. And why do you want to run a cam that was designed 10 years ago?

Any particular reason you want a big duration cam? Something along the lines of a 224/230 would probably allow you to hit your goal of 425 crank hp.

my cam is the 233/239 .580 lift w/1.6 comp. cams pro mag rockers. it lopes pretty good. nothing drastic though. it would be best suited to 4.10 gears and about a 3500 stall conv. and ofcourse you need long tube headers if you want to make any power with it. it should make peak power somewhere in the neighborhood of 6500 rpms with my ported heads. go to
www.cmotorsports.com they have great prices and can help you make a good cam selection to fit your budget (ie. what else you can afford to get to support the cam like gears and conv., pushrods, valve springs, etc.)

Why don't you want to bore the block? I understand that it will cost more money in machine work and new pistons, but it will be well worth it. It's very nice when you have round holes for round pistons. Also, you need to decide what you really want to do with your car. Everyday driver, weekend racer, etc..... I would go with a smaller, more drivable cam if you plan on driving this car regularly. The cam at the bottom of the page in Jeg's is not always the best choice. Anyways, IMHO once you pull the motor out and spend all the time tearing it apart, you may decide to go ahead and replace everything with new/better components that'll last 100,000 miles. If you have any questions about engine removal, teardown, parts selection, etc., we're here for you.

No offense, but you're not really making much sense...

Get the parts for a combo to get you 425 crank HP, not the parts to get just because you want to say "I have blah blah blah".

Why in the heck don't you want to bore the block? Your engine may or may not need it, won't know til you pull it out and mic the bores.

If you're wanting to make power at 7500+ RPM you're going to need some serious valvetrain components and intake/head flow.

You say you want hardened pushrods. Is that because you want to run non-self aligning rockers and guideplates?

Things just aren't adding up.

Do a search on Bret Bauer @ Bauer Racing for a custom cam.

Well like I said Im new to the LT1s. Its not gonna be a only vehicle driver..Just whenever I want to drive it..I dont want to bore the block if I dont have to. I just dont wanna thats my decision. Now as far as cams and stuff. I want a big durationi cam because thats how I want my motor setup.. maybe like a 270 a lil bigger. Now if yall could give me a little help on adding the rest to match up. Im going to get my heads ported and dual springs and some better valves also..But what about rockers, pushrods, lifters etc?

This thread is cracking me up.

You might wanna do a search in LT1 Tech and see some other combos that have put down the numbers you are looking for.
