Most affordable place for 12 bolt

I have been doing research on here about 12 bolts vs. 9" and I think the strange 12 bolt will fit my needs. It will for sure handle ~400 rwhp and 450rwtq...and is "suppose" to be quiter than the moser. I found it at T Byrne Motorsports for 2299. Is that a competitive price...is there a cheaper alternative that will handle that horsepower and be quite at the same time. I am going to wait until my A4 and 3.23's die on me before I do anything, but from the stories I have heard I may not have long on them. Any suggestions for upgrades and longevity of the stock rearend and tranny with this hp. Thanks

I have had my stock rear end in for 140k with no problems yet. Thats with plenty of track runs with slicks. I rebuilt the tranny at 135K (A4). A cheaper alternative wiuld probably just beefing up the stock rear and save alot of money. Rear ends tend to last us automatic guys alot longer than the six speed guys.

T/A cover with studs. Solid crush sleeves. New bearings. HD axles. Thats almost all you can do, and it gets expensive with the axles, definitely the cover with studs and the crush sleeves.

Look in jegs, or on Tbyrne or thunderracing. You can get a kit that has everything, when I find what Im talking about ill post it. its like $129 for the installation kit, maybe more with the bearings, not positive, the cover is the big thing, you can get a summit or jegs brand one too, theyre all basically the same, as long as it has bearing main cap studs

Thunderracing sells everything I was talking about right there in one package for $459, awesome price, considering the gears are 200 and the cover is 160. Ill be getting all that stuff pretty soon.

so would I need to ask them to upgrade to the kit that includes the wheel bearings and seals? Does this just bring my rear end to a stock rebuild or will it "beef" it up to handle that amount of horsepower and torque? What about the solid pinion spacer (crush sleeve)? Will I need that as well? WHat is the typical cost for the install of this kit? Will I be better off buying a new rear end? Thanks for the help jonaddis84!

There is no way to cover up the deficiencies of the stock rear end. It's simply too small. Don't waste your time and money trying to "upgrade" it. With an A4, your stocker may last quite a while (it may outlast the tranny!). When it breaks, get the Strange or Moser. There aren't any big bargains on these out there. From what I have seen, you get the same price and better service ordering direct. So I'd say order direct or get a used one.

I rebuilt my stock rear twice, when it was ready to go the third time I called Moser. The 12 bolt has two full seasons of racing on it plus street use and no problems. Best thing I ever did. Don't waste your time, money, and temper trying to enhance that weak stock rear.

This sucks, why did god invent 10 bolts?!? I guess maybe we should just get the gears, save up 2 grand, and just wait for it to go.

You could always wait for a group purchase too then you can save a couple hundred bucks maybe depending on how many people get in on it. I did a GP for McLeod clutches and I got a street twin for $760 w/ a steel flywheel when it normally would've cost me around $1000 for everything.

>like they said ... if you plan on massive HP then go with the Strange Engineering 12 bolt (Tbyrne has the best prices with his GP) .
The 9" won't allow you to use ABS so I went with the Strange
plus I don't like anything Ford on my car .

I am going to use the car as an every day driver. I just think ~$2300 is a ton of money...I know it's not much when you add up all the times you rebuild the stock rearend. Just kind of annoys me that our rear ends are so prone to going out on us. My brother has over 400 hp/425rwtq on his 5.0 and hasn't had any problems. His friend has over 700rwhp/700rwtq on his 5.0...all on stock rear end. Why don't they just put the 12 bolt in originally? Also, why does my threads always have that black sticker on them? Just wondering...thanks

I was surprised at the prices for Moser 12 bolts on the Spohn site. $1860... Add 33s and ABS and you're up around $2060. 9 bolts weren't bad either...
