More oil pan clearance. Drop K-member?

I've got the oil pan dropped about half an inch. I need more to check the pump to pan clearance. I am prepared to drop the K-member, but a few things just don't jive in my head.

The car is supported on jacks on the subframes. If I place a jack under the k-member and then remove or loosen the 6 bolts, is the engine going to come down (after I remove the motor mount bolts), with the k-member, or stay in its location held by the tranny mount? Won't the engine drop with the K-member?

Also, with the front suspension unloaded, when I drop the K-member, won't the shocks pull themselves apart? Or will I have to remove the strut bolts under the hood?

How much room can I realistically get with any of these methods, to check the pump to pan clearance?

Thanks guys. Any help is most valuable.

The K-Member supports the engine via the engine mounts. The tranny will not keep the engine in place! Also as you observed, the shocks/springs mount to your lower control arms, and the lower control arms mount to your K-member. I've read some have been successful place a jack under the tranny (just behind the oil pan) to hold the engine in place. Personally, I used an engine hoist to hold the engine in position when I dropped the K-member.

Yea you can do it. All you gotta do is put a jack under the bellhousing for an M6, then jack up on the engine a little to take the weight off the motor mount bolts. Then remove the motor mount bolts, then remove the 6 kmember bolts and pull on it till it comes down as much as it will go.. I also found that by removing the rack and pinion it gave me more room also.. NO the shocks will not come apart, you will be fine.

I had to do this as well. Procedure went as follows:

1. support motor and tranny with a tranny-jack (I supported on the bell-housing as well).
2. pull motor mount bolts
3. pull the two bolts that hold the rack in place.
4. Loosen 6 bolts that hold the k-member in place.

You should notice that the k-member isn't dropping very far, if any. It will be supported by the shocks and the rest of the suspension. Actually, I had to PULL the back of the k-member down to get enough clearence to get the pan out.
