Z95m6: i have done alot of searching and have read alot about this cam. many people seem to really like it on stock heads. the reason i put up a new post about it was because i was hopeing that someone could compare the cam i have vs the cc306.
Re: more cam help PLEASE
Okay, time for me to jump in here I guess?
I'm "the friend" T/A#4 was referring to and...... I need to set the record straight. The cam I'm currently running with my stock LT1 heads is the Comp Cam XE 230/236, ground +2 degrees advanced, on a 112 LSA; and NOT the CC 306 as T/A#4 thought. Simple mistake, happens all the time, sorry I can't give you anything specific regarding the CC 306 because....... I don't have one.
Now if you want to know about the XE 230/236....

I vote for the XE 230/236 over the 306. The XE's are newer grinds and I think have a little more lift than the 306 which will help balance out the power band some. You could also look into the 847 cam too. It's slightly bigger than the 306, but with a good tune it can be docile enough for the street and make great power.

Re: more cam help PLEASE
97 6speed how do you like your XE 230/236? hows it run on the street? what is the lsa? where does it make its power? hows the low end?
menbandit so the gm847 is alittle bigger then the cc306? i thought that even the 306 was pushing the limits of stock heads? do you know the lsa of the 847?
thanks guys!

, then a whole bunch is just right.
Re: more cam help PLEASE
seriously, though, it looks like you already have the stall you'll need. Are you running stock cam now?You also need to look at what you want to run. Do you want to spin the motor past 6000 RPM. RPM is what kills motors. Or more so springs. Sure , you'll match springs but if it is more of a daily driver then go for something with more bottom end power rather than something that peaks at 6500 RPM.I have learned not to pick my cams by numbers alone. Call any of the supporting vendors on this board and talk to the guys who know our cars.It is a lot of work to just realize that you made a bad cam choice
Re: more cam help PLEASE
yes im running the stock cam now. i guess ill try a couple vendors and see what they think. i really like the idea of the 847 and 306 but i dont want to lose the fun of the lowend on the street either. at this point im so lost

you can get the 847 on a 110 through summit but its a special order. most of the time its on a 112 and the 306 is on a 112 but what counts is the acctual overlap. you can have a cam with a 108 lsa and a cam with a 112 and the 112 may lope more becuse of the amount of overlap caused by duration
Re: more cam help PLEASE
Well, since you asked, here are a few more comments about the Comp Cam XE 230/236 cam that I'm currently running with my stock LT1 heads. My cam specs with the 1.6:1 Comp Magnum roller rockers I'm using are:
Intake Duration @ .050" - 230 degrees
Exhaust Duration @ .050" - 236 degrees
Intake Valve Lift (w/1.6 rockers) - .544"
Exhaust Valve Lift (w/1.6 rockers) - .555"
Lobe Separation Angle - 112 degrees
Ground In Advance - +2 degrees
My OBDI conversion PCM is programmed for a 6,600 RPM rev limit, and I usually shift the car at 6,200 - 6,300 RPM when racing. This cam makes good power from 2,900 RPM/3,000 RPM up to around 6,000/6,100 RPM where things start to fall off a bit, (hence the 6,200 - 6,300 shift point). In a 6 speed (i.e. manual) car, this cam is very streetable in my opinion, and I have NO complaints with low end torque.
But, then again, I'm also running a 4.10:1 ratio rear end gear and shorty headers.
Also, as someone else mentioned, the Comp Cam "XE" grinds are much newer grinds than the CC 306/305/304 series cams, and aledgely produce more "area under the curve" than older cam grinds with similar duration and lift specs.
Hope this info helps? Additional information about my "setup" and "performance to date", are contained in my signiture.
