money to spend...what to do??

when spring finally decides to roll around, i may have an extra $2000 or so. what would you do with the money? i wanted to buy some wheels and tires but i was thinking i would get something used and spend the majority on performance. i will be saving all winter as well so hopefully that will add to the amount i can spend. is heads/cam feasible for say 1500-1700? should i take a different approach? i was thinking ported heads and am open for suggestions on a cam. anyway if you have some words of wisdom, i could use the advice.

thanks a lot,
adam

I would think you could get decent heads and a good cam for 1500. Wished I had that 2000 to spend . Gl man.

I second this if and only if he already has all the other bolt-ons out of the way.

Re: money to spend...what to do??

the car right now has slp cold air induction and exhaust. i was thinking about pulleys and gears. along with the cam i would need roller rockers and springs? i wanted the car to make between 350 and 400 hp, probably closer to 400. what should i do aside from nitrous. by the way, i have been looking at headers and i think i will go ahead with those sooner or later but i wont have the money until spring time.

Re: money to spend...what to do??

well get headers before you do a cam and/or heads. as far as pulleys go, the only proven one we've seen has been the ASP replacement crank pulley. even with the ASP replacement pulley, you won't see big gains.

do you have an auto or manual?

Re: money to spend...what to do??

any major upgrades, particularly H/C will be severly bottlenecked if you don't have headers.

so those should be mod #1

beyond that, maybe some LE heads and a 230ish cam

lloyd elliott heads. if you have a manual, check out a nice set of 3.73 or 4.11 gears.

Re: money to spend...what to do??

Well, here's what I'd do. Headers, pulley, cam, rockers, LT4 KM, and some head work. Where's are you going to get the cash for all this you ask?? Well I have Mac Shorty headers(yeah, yeah) that I can sell for $300. they were used for 3K miles. I also have a Pulley that will go for best offer. Both need to add shipping. So that leaves you with $250 for the cam, I got self aligning 1.6 rockers for my 92 for $160, and then head gasket set costs about $50. Fluids will be another $50. Porting at the local shop to me costs $11 a hole. So that's $176...say $180. So Before the pulley and headers you're at about $725 with the knock module...I figured $35..about the most I've seen for an Ebay one, that's new. So now you've done all the work for about $725. Now add the $300 for the headers...that if you have a single cat will work great..andfigure $50 covers shipping anywhere in the country. Say you offer $75 for the pulley...we'll call that one shipped. Now you're up to $1150 and you did all the labor and you're happy. Now you can use $400..local price again to get a dyno tune, or go through MadWolf who is no doubt cheaper, and probably has a good tune for you. Now you're up to $1550. So that leaves you with another $450....What to do now??? Start saving for the next step or throw a few suspension peices in to help grip your new found power... or do a 4.10:1 Gear as your 6 shooter will love it and with double overdrive you'll still cruise at a reasonable RPM. That's what I would do...And the motor won't put down enough HP to break your rearend, it you're not racing it every weekend. The car would make a decent street car. And you can always save more cash to do bigger and better heads down the road that will help you gain even more from the cam...

Just my $.02
Chris

Re: money to spend...what to do??

not sure if id trust a porting place that charged porting 'per hole' Don't cut it cheap when it comes to a port job. Once you get full exhaust and all other bolt-ons, check out Lloyd's packages. Let me find and copy his info for ya...

Re: money to spend...what to do??

LE1 cam pulls from 2000 to 6300 RPM and should make 370-390 RWHP with matching heads, 30 lb injectors, 52 TB, 1 3/4 LTs, No cats, good tuning, etc. The heads are ported using stock valves, performance valve job, back cut valves, CM 612 springs, retainers and locks, milling, cleaning and assembly. These heads flow about 255/180 with a 195 cc intake port and stock LT1's flow about 215/150 with a 170 cc intake port.

Heads and cam are $1100 (plus shipping) and will pass emissions with good tuning. This has the RPM range of the Hot Cam or CC 305 cam but makes more HP and TQ through out the entire RPM range. This will work
with any gear and converter but the track times will be better with a stall and some gear.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LE2 cam pulls from 2200 to 6500 RPM and should make 400-420 RWHP with matching heads, 30-36 lb injectors, 52-58 mm TB, 1 3/4 LT's, no cats, GOOD tuning, etc. The heads are ported and machined for larger Ferrea 2.00/1.56 valves, Comp 987 dbl springs, TITANIUM 10 degree retainers, locks, locators, milling, cleaning and assembly. These will flow about 270/190 with a 205 cc intake port.

Heads and cam are $1600 (plus shipping) and will need GOOD tuning. This has the RPM range of the CC 306 cam but will make more HP and TQ at peak and across the board. The REAL difference will be the LE2 cam will make TQ in the 2500 RPM range and the cc 306 doesn't start until way past this. It will make more HP than the cc 306 at ALL RPM's.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LE3 cam pulls from 2600 to 6800 RPM in a 350 (2300 to 6500 RPM in a 383) and should make 410 to 430 RWHP with matching heads, 36-42 lb injectors, 58 TB or mono blade, GOOD tuning, etc, etc, etc. These are the same heads from above but with Comp 977 springs instead of the 987's. These are stronger and will also need Comp R lifters to handle the spring pressure.

Heads and cam are $1700 (plus shipping) and will need GOOD tuning. This cam is similar to the GM 847 cam but makes about 10 more HP at peak and starts making HP sooner. Makes more HP and TQ across the board. Needs gear and converter to work well in a 350. Pretty much a racing cam for the 350 or a good street cam that will act like the LE2 in a 383.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Everyone has a different opinion about what is streetable and what a safe RPM limit is for their engine.

If you are looking for just cylinder heads and no cam, the heads are priced at . . . . .

$750 for the LE1 heads only
$1250 for the LE2 heads only
$1300 for the LE3 heads only

Re: money to spend...what to do??

man you guys are helping me out a lot. i think even the stage one heads would be awesome. the money is pending on whether or not i sell my 1992 lumina. im driving it in the winter and fixing it up a bit as the weather improves. i got it for a good price and its a really decent car. anyone know where i can get wheels for cheap? ive looked on ebay and they seem to have a number of zr-1 z06 and ss wheels. is there anywhere else that sells wheels for my car? maybe more of an aftermarket look if you will...i mean obviously vette wheels arent oem on a camaro but for example, i really like the cragar ss wheels. ive seen some other, much more expensive options...not big on the idea of wasting all my money on looks. although i really like the firehawk wheels slp has. open to ideas.

thanks again,
adam
