Mill the intake or elongate bolt holes???
Mill the intake or elongate bolt holes???
Hit yet another snag on my rebuild project. I went to put the intake on yesterday and it will not line up properly. I even made some dowels out of 3/8-16 all-thread to help guide it down and even though it will clear them (one in top left hole, one on right rear), no other bolts will screw in.
I changed to a Mr. Gasket .026 head gasket. That alone has dropped the head .023". Phil also decked the heads (he's getting me info on that). My block has not been touched. The HP Book states that the intake will need milled on any difference >=.020" and gives a couple formulas to figure out how much to mill off the sides and rails. However, I have read a couple posts where people have just elongated the bolt holes. Guess I'm just worried about port alignment and the possibilty of oil getting in the runners. Also concerned that my past front and rear intake leak will be worse now since the intake sits up higher.....
HERE are some pictures. As you can see there is a good size gap at the front and the "dowel" is not aligned in its hole. I would much rather just elongate the holes, but at the same time I don't want this to cause problems down the road.
So far, everyone here and at AI has been extremely helpful.... Thanks....

Anyway the machine shop that did your heads should be able to do your intake as well.

Re: Mill the intake or elongate bolt holes???
Ended up elongating the holes--PITA. Checked with a couple machine shops around here and they wanted $200.00 to mill my intake. I checked the port alignment and it appears ok. Hopefully the RTV will hold, I have a .080" gap on the front rail. Phil ended up milling the heads .024" (54cc) so overall I have lowered the heads by .047".
