Manual "pinto" steering rack, any ideas?
Manual "pinto" steering rack, any ideas?
Hey guys. Been looking through the BMR fabrications catalog, was looking into some BMR K-members, and noticed they have two. One for use with a stock rack and one for use with a "Pinto" manual rack.
Anyone use a manual rack on an LT1? What is it like for street driving? I plan on the car being fairly modified, but would still like to keep its street maners.
Anyone do this? What are the benefits and the cons? Thanks a lot guys!

Pinto racks are pretty good for 2500 lb class vehicles. If your F-body is heavier, you are probably going to work the rack over it's design limit..but hey, it's only what keeps you on the road.
"Armstrong" or manual gears are pretty heavy steering when they are heavily loaded. It makes evasive maneuvering a lot like practice bleeding.
Up side is it saves about the weight of a couple gallons of gas.
I'd stick with F-body (power) gear if it were my street/strip car.
My $.02

Sounds good. My stock rack got damaged in an accident, so I'll be needing to upgrade anyway.
