manifold bolt broke off in head-HELP!!

Well in an attempt to swap out y-pipe with one with a gutted cat things kept breaking off until I now have the two back bolts in my driver side head broken off in the head. I swear it's just never gonna end with this POS.

Anyway my question is am I gonna have to take off the head to fix it or can it be done in the car?

It can be done on the car very carefully with left haned drill bits and a 90 degree angle drill. I've been successfull in my many attempts. Just makes sure you use a center punch in the middle of the bolt so the drill bit doesn't veer off into the head. Good luck.

I was reading some post I searched and saw where some people said that headers don't use the last two bolt holes in the head. Is this true? If so i may be in business becuase the last two bolts are the ones that broke off in my head.

dont use the last bolt onlt...they use the second to latst...the drivers side id use a right hand drill and drill a hole in the center of whats left..then use an easy out deal to get it out...let a professional mecnahic do it...if you slip you have to pull the head go get it welded ect...it sux

Re: manifold bolt broke off in head-HELP!!

Well I don't have enough money to get headers and I used the set of Fel-Pro 1406 header gaskets to check the last two bolts on my head. The further up one would still pose a problem if I were to do headers.

I went to Sears and got a screw extractor set. Has anyone used one of these and had any success?

"if you slip you have to pull the head go get it welded ect...it sux" Amen! I just went from a header install to a heads and header install.

Well, we tried to do the bolt extractor thing tonight to no avail. The bits weren't for crap and would penetrate the bolt very well. So we stopped fearing in doing more harm than good.

What are my other options as far as getting these damn bolts out?!?!

Pull the head: It will take a lot less time than fooling around and risking damage. Once the head is off you should be able to grap the bolts with brand name "vice grips" or drill and use an easy out if necessary----always important to use a new, quality drill bit. JMHO

you can pull the head it will be easier adn that head is the easier head...you do have the manifold off already right? if so then just pull the valve cover...then the rocker nuts, rockers, pushrods then start pulling head bolts

Do you have to remove the intake manifold before you take the head off?
