Major problem after Cam install, please help...

Me and my little brothers just got done installing a cc306 cam into our youngest brother's 1995 Formula. We installed all the new parts (cam, lifters, roller rockers, valve springs, plugs/wires, longtubes, etc...) and we experienced a major problem tonight when we tried to start it up.

We were finishing up installing everything. We had just installed the starter, ran all the top end wires, put the alternator, intake, and battery. Now here is the problem. We put the red terminal (positive) on the positive post of the battery. No problem there. Then when we put the black terminal (negative) on the negative terminal, the damn car tried to start up. The negative terminal spark a lot and you could hear the starter clicking. So we took it away from the negative terminal. Everything then stopped. Then we tried it once more to see if it was just a fluke. We left it on the negative terminal just a bit longer and you could actually see the pulleys start rotating and the motor sounded like it wanted to start. This is a 6 speed car and the car was in neutral with no key in the ignition and the clutch was fully disengaged. I am about 99.9 percent sure that everything is installed correctly.

Do you guys have any idea what would cause the car to turn over and try to start with the negative terminal being applied to the negative post????

Thanks

The starter is likely grounding itself against the solenoid. Make sure the wires arent touching each other on the starter itself. (take off the nuts and make sure the two wires are pointing away from each other).

You know, that makes complete sense. There was one of the starter wires that we extended to get away from the passenger side header. well, we added a tad too much wire, about 3 inches too much. So we moved the wire that was facing the header to the same direction as the otehr starter wire. Well, I guess that would make sense that they are probably touching which would be causing our problem.

Well, at least I know we are definately getting spark, fuel and all the other trimmings

She sounded real healthy being three feet in the air and trying to start up.

Thanks guys./

Hehe..ive done the same...scared the crap out of me the first time I did it...I usually just loosen the "hot" wire(purple) and move it as far away as the GRND post as possible and it always fixes it..
