main girdle or splay caps?
main girdle or splay caps?
Building a sts turbo'd 383 and have stumbled on a issue well one of many. I am trying to figure out what bottom end to use but do i need to splay the main caps or can i use a main cap girdle. The company i work for sells the girdles so i wasn't sure. I haven't seen many people use them on the lt1's.
My plans with the car is high rpm road racing, so i need to make sure it stays together.
Thanks guys
I'm having TPIS in Minnesota do the machine work and I will be doing the assembly. I will be using AI heads or something else i haven't decided yet.

Re: main girdle or splay caps?
well I spin it at 6900 right now at the strip but I think I will be in the same area with the 383. I would like 600-750 hp. I kind of figured the spayed caps would be best bust wasn't sure.
I'm going to have a lot of money in it this time and I am tired of blowing up my motor, so i want to build it once the right way.

Re: main girdle or splay caps?
I would say that of all of the FI builds that I have read about on here, they were splayed caps, the occasional 4 bolt block, or a few guys who just left it a factory 2 bolt, and I don't know of anyone using the main girdle. So I don't know if they work or not to stabilize the caps. I used Pro Gram caps on my engine and was never sorry that I spent the extra money to build it strong.
