Main caps ordering....
I bought a block, and the caps werent installed.
How do i know the order they go in?
Obviously, the oil one goes in the rear. I see the forward markings on everything.
Some are stamped 2, 3, 4. Is that the order and if so, comming from front to rear?

some blocks had the numbers cast on them. they went in order from front to rear. im not sure about the lt1, i didnt pay attention to that when i had my pan off. id assume that if the guy you got them from stamped them, they'd be from front to rear. you might want to talk to whomever you got it from though.

they were stamped from the factory it looks like. The guy i bought it from doesnt know.
Align bore, blah...this is the ultimate budgtet motor, lol.

Well as a professional engine builder, I've seen many of my build-ups just like the one you're encountering. As for the P/Ns, look for the ending #'s (56432401), that will be your first cap. 02, 03, and so on. Even if the ending #'s are such this "15, 16, 17, 18"

Not so sure of that^ the block in my basement has numbers that are close but they don't go one after the other. It has like 801, 731, 733....then again they might not be in the correct order---from the guy i got it from.

Yes they have a F,2,3,4 on them. F or 1 is the front one, then 2 back to the rear main cap. Check to make sure the bore on all of them is equal and should be 2.640" (if I remember but it's the last day of the holiday weekend) The next step is to get bearings and plasti guage and check clearances and make sure that the crank still spins in the bearings with a coating of oil.

I have matched up caps to correct positions by observing the machining patterns in the cap and block. It can be done, if a person is experienced enuf, and knows what to look for, providing the surfaces are not damaged or rusty.
