main cap stud questions

i'm in the middle of my first engine build, i'm pretty excited but it's been to long since i've taken it apart and i've got some questions....... maybe i'll do a build up, iono?
when going to torque down the main caps. the 2 middle ones that are studs i don't have a deep socket long enough. do i j/need to find a longer socket or is there a special tool? and uhmm.. why are there threads at the end of the studs what goes on them? i cannot remember for the life of me... thanx

You just need a deeper socket, and the threaded ends are for the factor windage tray.

The studs don't attach to anything in the pan. There is a piece of fairly flat sheet metal that fits over the studs. You can see it just above the oil pump pickup in this diagram (courtesy of Shoebox):
