To be honest though, depending on what type of TQ curve you are looking for, the MAC's might be better, or the RKSports might be better. I wanted the better low end TQ that the MAC's get you, since I drive my car 50 miles per day and value the daily driving as well as the great performance.
AS&M's have the potential to get more HP, but you need an engine that requires the extra flow that a 1 3/4" primary can get you. The MAC's have shown better gains than 1 3/4" LT's with equal heads/cam packages.

Can also get mine frrom top without removing anything, fat hands and stubby fingers
Coating sux but, nice headers. Coating down low comes off first. Plus welds are kinda impeading flow, alot of people gind the flange welds down on the inside. and some re-weld outside and grind farther but no probs here with just grinding.

There was one area that I decided to grind my front crossmember slightly, but I don't think it was necessary. The fit was great.

Dan you should work for MACs. You have nothing bad to say about these, it cracks me up.
And about the thouht of 1 5/8 LTs, the main reaon that they havent done that is because there is more to designing a header than just backpressure provided by the main tubes. The main advantage of long tube headers is the equilization effect that takes place due to equal length runners (some are).
When you determine what RPM you want the headers to run best at, you will need to take into consideration primary tube length and diameter. If you go Long tubes and 1 5/8 primaries, then it would change the RPM band......
Just thinking out loud. I have macs and like them. Need to get them coated though.

Dan,
Great pictures and much appreciated. I will save them for my
"maybe in the future" file. I am still not ready to give up on
the cast iron exhaust manifolds, especially since my long range
plan is a baby cam.
FireHawk409,
As for true duals with mids, it should be no problem at all to
go all the way back over the axle w/ 2.5" pipes. The way to do
it is to route the pipes on the passenger side just like the stock
configuration. If you want quiet, use an Ultraflow or Magnaflow
muffler. Dumped at the axle with bullets is waaaaay to loud and
probably stinky as well. If your only consideration is cheap, then
the Lane's route dumped a the axle is the way to go.

I know I sound one sided, but after studying how headers work, MAC's were my obvious choice. When I joined this board, whenever someone asked about headers, the automatic response was, " Get Long tubes, they are the best" or "You will regret getting anything other than LT's" I'm a mechanical engineer by profession and it's part of my nature to over analyze things. When I started to look into header theory, I quickly found out the LT's were not for me. I would rather have a 1 5/8" primary LT header than a 1 3/4" LT header. I would also rather have a 1 5/8" midlength header than a 1 3/4" midlength header, like the RKsports or SLP's. The 1 5/8" primaries help a lot with good low end TQ compared to 1 3/4" because of exhaust scavenging. Also, when I see the same heads/cam packages making equal power at 400 rwhp with both MAC's and LT's, it lets me know that I'm not going to outgrow my MAC's, since I don't even plan on making that kind of rwhp, but it shows that the MAC's can handle it, no problem.
I just want the header arguement to be more scientific, instead of just taking someones word for it.

I hear what you are saying. I think the 1 5/8 primaries for the mids are better too because they do act like a longer tube because of scavenging like you said. The bigger the tubes, the longer they need to match the scavenging RPM. Thats why almost all 1 3/4 are long tubes.
Dan, remember the argument we had about HP vs TQ... that still cracks me up to this day.

The SLP Single Cat 1-3/4's arent that bad when you use the right tools. I can do all of mine from the top in ~45min to 1 hr using a shortened & drilled socket and ratcheting end wrench.
