m6 and rear end ?????'s

i just picked up my 94 t/a m6 today. i have never driven a 6 speed before, but have driven many manuels inclunding tractor trailors....this thing shifts like a dump truck!! i funally found 6th...haven't found 5th yet, and got it hung between gears once and like to have never gotten it back in gear. are they all like this? is it my shifter? is it me? what can i do about it? i had a check engine light on. i didn't see a shift light come on (cags ?).

i also have a whining in my rear, but haven't checked the gear oil yet. do the rears take a special gear oil?

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know about your shifting problem........mines as smooth as a babys butt.......
If you have aftermarket gears in the rear - they might be the cause of the howling. May want to change the oil anyhow. You'll use to add some Limited Slip Additive along with the oil.
Good Luck!

My M6 was smooth as butter too. No problems. An aftermarket shifter will make is "crisper", but a healthy T56 should not "shift like a dump truck". Maybe some bent shifter forks, or worn synchro's.

Sounds like you have aftermarket gears in the rear, and they didn't bother to correct for that in the computer. Maybe they did correct it with a Hypertech programmer, then returned the computer to stock when they sold the car, so they could also sell the HPP.

You also might want to add a "signature" with info about your car... particularly what year. That will help people answer questions about skip shift and the SES light, since not all years are the same.

When you say "picked up" do you mean buy it, steal it, what? If you bought it from a personal party, ask them about the car.

If you bought it from a dealer, find out who ownded the car and track them down.

Just from the info you have provided, I would guess, that someone beat the hell out of the tranny and rearend, but maybe not.

I hope that I am wrong, but you shouldn't have trouble shifting unless the syncros are shot. As for the rear end, whining doesn't necessarily mean different gears, it might mean that the gears are going too.JMHO

Good Luck.

IT'S A 94 T/A M6.

it was a bank repo, so i can't contact the previous owner. the car is nearly flawless as far as the interior/exterior go. it looks really taken care of, but you never know. the gears don't grind, it just seems like the shifter has a ton of slop in it

thtmay be the junky shifter we got stuck with from the factory.

but i would check the rear before you drive it any farther. or you will be putting a 12 bolt in, but then thats not all bad.
