LT's hitting heat shield!!!

I installed some LT's about 6 months ago and here lately I have noticed that they are hitting my heat shield on the passenger side. I am in the middle of installing a clutch and took off the heat shield on the passenger side. Should/Could I leave it off??? Or, do I just need to modify it a little so its not hitting anymore???

Re: LT's hitting heat shield!!!

I removed all my heatshielding...Wether or not that was a good idea, who knows? Your lucky they are only hitting your heat shielding. Mine beat the **** out of floor boards all the time, and it seems to be a pretty common problem with LT's in general. Without the heat shielding, it will raise the temperatue inside the car though. I also didnt have any of the sound deading insulation under my carpet either. Im no one, so do what you want.

I removed all the heat shields as well.
I run true duals (no cats) and lite weight carpet. My tootsies get a little warm but its nothing I can't live with.

Well it is only the heat shield on the passenger side, so if I leave that off it won't be that big of a deal. I guess if I want I can keep it and put it back on whenever I want. Thanks guys!!!

Re: LT's hitting heat shield!!!

Same thing with the pacesetters on my drivers side. I stared under it for 30mins tryin to think of what to do. I eventually went to the muffler shop and the guy puts it on the hoist, gets a pry bar and wedges a piece of old tire between the heat sheild and pipe and clamps the rubber to the pipe.

"There ya go buddy" Cool! He didn't want a penny for it. I mean it was easy enough for me to do if I had thought of it. I gave him $10 anyways.

Smelled slightly like burned rubber for a week or so. Not too bad though and the knock that my I was picking up went away! Banging headers can produce false knock which will back off the timing. Good solution I think with the old tire.

I removed the gas tank heat shielding and was running a cat back with the muffler unbolted (exhaust exiting right under the tank) and had no problems, also ran with the muffler in place and less than an inch of gap between the tank and muffler with no problems. The thing that really scared me was my longtubes and tube mufflers that were bolted on them touching my fuel lines running to the front of the car but never had problems with that either. I always was expecting my car to blow up driving down the road though.

Re: LT's hitting heat shield!!!

Well the only place I can see where the header is hitting is the passenger side. I went ahead and just left it off. I have the car backtogether right now but the only problem is that I am waiting for my Pro 5.0, O2 sensors, and I had to get another set of 02 extensions because I ordered the wrong ones. Hopefully I can have it all in by the end of the week and have my car running by this weekend.

Have you changed the motor mounts yet?

Re: LT's hitting heat shield!!!

I took the heat shields off and cut off the portions with a dremel cutoff wheel that were contacting the header, then reinstalled them. I guess some is better then none.

Yeah I did the motor mounts when I did the headers and I just did the Tranny mount when I did the clutch. Man it's horrible looking at my car with a new clutch and no more exhaust leaks and not being able to drive it because I'm waiting on 3 tiny parts.

Yeah, I know the feeling, I didn't drive my car right away after the header install because I was waiting for some parts, one of them being, cough cough, Elite plug wires.

Re: LT's hitting heat shield!!!

Im surprised to see all these comments about passenger side clearance. Ive had no problems at all with my passenger side near the heat shielding and I even had cats tucked there for a while. The drivers side however is a different story. I had to smash up the floor brace just a tad there to make a 2.5" y-pipe clear. Even as it is with over 1/2" of clearance there it will hit ocasionally when my clutch gets moody.
