LT4 starter not fitting correctly?
LT4 starter not fitting correctly?
I installed my new LT4 starter and there seems to be a fitment issue all around the area where the old LT1 starter had the peice that slides inside. Is anyone else having this problem with theirs?
There is basically a thin gap running along the rear side where it meets the Tranny metal. It seems the old LT1 had a peice that would slide inside and since this doesnt have that, it looks like all kinds of things could fly into there
I can get pics emailed unless someone wants to host them.
Also the car starts and runs fine, along with a sweet heavily modded start sound.

Re: LT4 starter not fitting correctly?
Alright, you know how the LT1 starter has the rounded peice that slides into the sheet metal flywheel housing when mounted? Ok well the LT4 one doesnt have that, and since it doesnt have that after the LT4 is mounted, the hole for the old starter is too big for the LT4 unit leaving an open slot around where the LT1 starter would normally fill in. This makes me nervous having an open slit around the outside of the starter and I dont want things to get inside, unless it doesnt matter. Does anyone understand that? It starts and runs fine but I dont want to damage my engine having snow/sleet/salt and other particles entering my housing through there. Thanks fella's.

Re: LT4 starter not fitting correctly?
I wouldn't worry about it..... there's not even a cover plate on a JW Ultra Bell.

The LT4 starter's own thin bolt that holds it together is the culprit. I plan to bang this bolt in towards the starter (it is already bent a little from the header), or shaving off a little to make it fit. Is the started held together by only two whimpy bolts? Is it safe to remove one of them?
Re: LT4 starter not fitting correctly?
my issue with the LT4 starter is it will not go in between the stock exhaust and the trans like the stock piece does, the stock starter just barely slips past the exhaust and has to be manipulated to get into place. The new LT4 starter is just slightly larger in dimension where I cant get it past the exhaust and trans no matter what way I turn it. So I either have to take the exhaust off or grinding the starter down maybe?
Any help or ideas?

Re: LT4 starter not fitting correctly?
I dont really have any ideas, I did mine with longtubes. I am not sure why it would be harder, the LT4 one is shorter and the solenoid is on the opposite side. Perhaps it is larger in diameter, but I dont remember it being too much larger. All I can say is maybe try a bit harder? Good job searching first though, its always nice to see my threads get found and re-newed. Hopfully someone with stock exhaust manifolds can help you out.

Re: LT4 starter not fitting correctly?
Is the solenoid actually on the motor side or the exhaust side? I'm installing mine right now and i cannot get the smaller bolt in because the solenoid is hitting against the headers
Maybe I have the wrong starter?

Re: LT4 starter not fitting correctly?
The LT4 starter won't fit with all headers, there are clearance issues with some.
When my motor was out I had some SLP single cat headers from the last setup, and my Hooker LT's, and I mocked the LT4 starter up with both of them. With the long tubes they fit just fine. I reported clearance issues with the SLP's, one of the primaries was hitting the side of the starter. I had some guy argue with me till he was blue in the face that the LT4 starter would work fine with SLP's, but if you look up a few posts there's a guy having fitment issues with his.

Re: LT4 starter not fitting correctly?
Well you might as well put Jet-hot LT's on the list of headers that don't fit with the LT4 starter. I would have to dent in the primary wayyy too far to fit. Not something I like to do with headers.
I will post a crappy camera phone pic shortly
