lt4 Hotcam Kit

i have a 97 z28, with basic bolt on mods. and am looking into getting an lt4 hotcam kit and lt4 xtreme duty timing set. what is everyone's experiance with this cam kit? how is installation. i heard the rocker arms wont fit properly with the baffels on the valve covors. what about the numbers you get out of it. i ram 13.8 before, i'm hoping to achieve a 12.7 after camkit, timing set, longtube headers, and drag radials. but i'm mainly concerned with instalation. how hard is it without a lift?

I bought it. Its sitting under my bed due to $$$ reasons. Other than that, the installation was practically intantanious. Noticed no difference in driving or anything.

Without taking the engine out, the installation is a PITA. And after having driven around in my car with the Hotcam for a while, I wish I had gotten a bigger cam. It is definitely not a bad cam; it is very streetable and doesn't have too much cam surge or lope to it, but still it leaves a little left to be desired. If you want to stick with GM, try the GM 847. If not, CompCams 306 is a popular choice also. There won't be any valve cover clearance issues with any of the cams mentioned above. Just make sure that you get nice springs to go along with any of these cams. Good luck.

Thumbs up

If you do a search you will get probably all the info your looking for. As far as the RR having clearence issues, that is false. I had no problems with mine. The install is tedious but not bad if you have any mechanical ability. Just get a haynes manual or/and a GM Manual. I used both & anytime I had a question I posted it here. If your looking for a 12.7 you should be able to achieve it especially since your an M6. I ran a 12.9 @ 106 before I added a converter. Then 12.3's after at 108 - 110 mph.... A lot of people will tell you to go bigger but this cam is a performer. Hands down. I may go bigger someday but know I will be sacrificing a lot of drivability. This cam feels almost stock except for the 112 LSA lope... Good Luck

i thought the lt4 hotcam was the biggest cam you could go with on stock heads, i want which ever will give me the most power. i heard the lt4 cam kit will put your engine output to about 380 or so. with that gm cam or that 305 cam, what else will you need for instalation? just valve springs or will you need more?

If you don't plan on porting your heads, the 306 cam will be a bit too big. However, the hotcam kit will perform well and certainly will get you well into the 12's on sticky tires and tuning. However, if you plan on more mods such as ported heads and or a performance rebuild, the hotcam will be too small to take full advantage of ported stock heads or aftermarket heads. If you can afford to have your heads ported by a shop (about $500 around here for a stage 2 out of 3 job), get that done then the 306 or something similar, 1.6 rr's, and the rest of the valvetrain upgraded. I think with the 306 and headwork you'll pushing close to 390 or maybe 400 hp with tuning and Hooker LT's, and with just the hotcam kit, maybe 350 hp.

If you get the HOTcam kit the roller rockers will fit under the valve covers no problem. I am really happy with mine, and recommend it. You might want to consider going with tougher valves as my machinist told me that the springs were marginal. I had him get a better set for me.

Installation is a bitch. I did heads and cam at the same time so mine was double all of that garbage. The only advice I can give is to be really careful around the timing chain cover. If not you'll rip the oil pan gasket of bust some seals on the front of the cover and it will leak.
