LT4 Hot cam Kit. Pros and Cons
LT4 Hot cam Kit. Pros and Cons
I am about to buy a LT4 hot cam kit and want to know what the por and cons are. I have most bolt ons and even have a LT4 58mm intake and throttle body. My question is: What type of rwhp and torque increases will I see once the cam ect... is installed? Is there anything that I need to watch out for when doing this swap? Is there anything easy that I could do while the i'm in there to up the performance a little more? My car has 120,000 on the clock. I need a little advice about some things to do while I'm in there as well as some round-a-bout hp numbers. Any thougts?
Re: LT4 Hot cam Kit. Pros and Cons
You should look at replacing your timing chain, maybe with the LT4 timing chain. A lot of guys do this with a new cam install, since you are in there anyway, and will most likely be spinning the RPM's higher. Oh yea, and you might want to consider new OEM replacement lifters.
Depending on what your HP is now, you should get to 325-340 rwhp if you have a M6. If it's an auto, the numbers will be about 10-15 hp less.
The TQ should probably stay about where you are now, but will extend higher in the RPM range. It should be around 325 rwtq with the Hotcam kit.
There are no major drawbacks to the Hotcam kit, in my opinion. It has great tuning off the shelf from madz28 or pcmforless. It's cheap, and runs good.
One downside is the self aligning rockers that come in the kit are a little louder than non-self aligning rockers, but they seem to work good from those that have them.

Re: LT4 Hot cam Kit. Pros and Cons
most common complaint i've seen is that guys wish they had gone bigger on the cam.
after all the $$ spent, a few hundred more could have yielded reasonable more hp.

without some machining on the lt1 heads or the lt4 intake, it will not work. Your best bet is to either go with some lt4 heads or you can leave your lt1 intake on the lt1 heads. As far as the cam kit goes, there is no cons. It is cheap, reliable, makes decent power, and sounds killer. True most people go with a bigger cam later but it is because of the performance bug, not because the cam is too small. You can't beat that kit.
