LT1's keyed crank or not? Need help fast.

Ok I am putting in this engine for a kid at school. He had bought a rebuilt lt1 engine from oriellys. Which I think gets them from power torque engines or somthing like that. But anyways.... The crank had a key in it and the balancer would not go on... I beleive that lt1 balancers are tapperd fit. But anyways this vehicle is a 94 firebird formula the engine is going in.. Any advice or knowledge of this?

Stock crank hubs are not keyed. The only key is for the crank gear. It is not a tapered fit, but an interference fit. If it has a key in the front keyway on the crank, just remove it.

I hope they balanced the motor, because the counterweights are cut differently on the gen I's and LT1's

So the front hub should just go on any way correct? And will removing the key throw off the balancing of the crankshaft or should I just go ahead and take the key out and throw the hub on?

To make life easier in the future, the hub should be installed with the cast mark at 12 o'clock when the crank is at #1 or #6 TDC. That will put the pulley arrow at 12, as well. Just remove the forward key and install the hub. No balance problem will come from that.

Make sure the key on the crank sprocket does not stick out past the sprocket or it will not let the hub slide all the way on .

96ZCamaro:

Why not cut a keyway in the hub bore?

Take the hub to a local automotive machine shop or small general purpose shop ... they'll be able to do it. Or once you've indexed the hub to TDC you could employ the "hacksaw blade & file" company" to do the job!
