. I think the best bet would to go with AFR heads but they can get expensive especially if you want to make alot of power and plug access sucks the left!
i cant believe that anyone would even say that an LT1 is better than an LS1!!!!! shoulda known that wasnt going to fly around here. LS1's were built by god himself. u didnt know that.
it kills me that everyone thinks LS1's are "far superior" what is so superior about them? they are only faster stock for stock b/c they come with a bigger cam,and better flowing heads. how is that superior? once u start moding them, they are about the same IMO.
the money u save by buying a LT1, u can use to mod the hell out of it. that is all i have done and i fare pretty well against the LS1 boys with the same mods
cam only LT1 running low 12's, yeah they are slow.
anyway, back to the point. i think LS1's are easier to work on as far as maintnance goes.
BUT the price for parts are higher.
i havent had any trouble working on my LT1 or on my buddies LS1. neither one has the upmost amount of room
choice is yours my man. but if u plan on going with an LS1, might want to start working on the cokcy, jackass attitude that comes with owning one!

lol or the denial attitude of lt1 owners that something is better than what they have.
i never said the lt1 was a bad enginge, i think some of you guys took that the wrong way. if the lt1 was so much better why would they have changed them in the corvette and f-body's?
you say the ls1 has a bigger cam eh. how about you go find the cam specs and post them. (not saying it isn't, i am just unsure
better designed heads that flow more do help make them better, but i never said anything about it being far superior. never said they were slow either.

LS1s are easier to work on imo...
and i rather a LS1 too...
BUT
find me a car that costs 5000 which dynoes 251/284 (stock) and runs almost a 13.9 (14.000) stock... for me it also has stock tranny, stock opti stock wiring and stock 4 plugs
(95K miles)
find me an ls1 for that...
u aitn gunna find one... and imo LT1s are much more reliable than ls1s... i mean come on iron vs alum man...
but LS1 is one of the best engines taht GM has created... I hope it will continue with LS2 and LS7... (or w/e it'll be in c6s :P)
concept is the same though... 2 valve per cylinder single cam v style 8 cylinders... ignition is diffrent, firing order is diffrent, has diff (and better flowing heads) and a tiny bit bigger cam... alum block for a lighter car, and several more things i dont know/remember... ure not comparing a variable DOHC 46 valva state of art engine here... both have the same exact concept...
if i find an ls1 for 5000 will I swtich over? yes...
Will I find a reliable LS1 that has as much as mileage as mine that still gets up and goes? nope
plus i got 350ci and they have 346 :P we can all change the hp rating easy, but getting the displacement changed aint so cheap :P (for ppl that doesnt have the work joke in their dictionary, disregard)

this thread could go on for days as it has before. Most everyone in here will have a biased opinion because they have either a ls1 or lt1. for this anwser you should just go to a pro mechanic and ask him.

I have both , and I think LS1 is better . My t/a gets 2 times the milage of my LT1 and whoops it on the highway badly ....I have worked on both also .

stock vs stock the ls1 is better, however when you throw mods and money at it, it doesnt matter which is better. if your asking stock vs stock, then yeah the ls1 is better. but when mods and money come into play it wont matter much.
whos got the 18* sbc heads on there lt1? didnt it dyno at 500+rwhp? i may be way off here.
either way you look at it 400rwhp is 400rwhp whether its out of a ls1 lt1 or a sbc.
if you have to choose then go with that you feel comfortable working on/with. personally locally i wont trust any shop to work on a LS1. hell they have enough trouble figuring out how to dyno them.

The LS-1 is the better engine. The LS6 shows us that.
Even in Super form (LT-4) the LT's are no match for the LS's
They're just better engineered engines. Most aftermarket parts for them are like $50-200 bucks cheaper...they respond extremely well to modes, and have a tendency to beat moded LT-1's
I raced a guy on an empty street once. He had a SS LS-1. It was embarassing. The Guy had his wife in the car with him..and they dusted the LT like it was a Civic....that won't happen again
The real quesiton is not are LS-1's better than LT-1's but should we consider the LS's friends....or Foes? So far the LS guys are as bad as the many 5.0's out there.
On a side note check out GMHTP magazine. THey did an LT-1 Vs. LS-1 shoot out. The LS's were faster...and the LT-1's that were running close times to the LS's had allot more engine work done.

Man, this post is on every page of every F-body forum out there!
But I'll add my .02
I think it's all a matter of preference.
LT1's have great low end power, bottom end is almost bulletproof (Or so I hear) Seen them last beyond 300,000 miles with plenty of mods and they sound F**king Awesome! But the plug access sucks, headers are a biatch to install and if you drive one, almost all LS1 owners say they will own you. And dont forget the Opticrap.
LS1's on the other hand have a monster top end, I swear they would never stop if that motor spooled up more. I dont know if the all aluminum block is good or bad? Aluminum tends to expand, but it also has better heat dissapation. Plug access aint the greatest, but way better than the LT's. They sound good but not as good as the LT's. They also respond better to mods. But everybody I know with an LS1 seems to go through a quart of oil every 3k?
But stock for stock the LS1 would take an LT1. Just look at my sig, My very slightly modded LT1 ran a few tenths slower than my G/F's bone stock LS1.

...well just wait till the fifth generation cars come out...and they will. Then all the LS1 boys will be crying
Of course I'll have that cocky, jackass attitude cause I'll be getting one as soon as they come out!!!
