I agree with you totally...My 94 Z is cheaper to get full coverage on than a 98v6.

I'm putting myself in your shoes.I'm in college and need all the money I can get.I have a car that is paid for that gets 20-21 mpg.If I spend at least 250 a month on a car payment I can get a car that is newer and gets 25 mpg for about the same insurance rate. Will I save over 250 a month in fuel? Will I be the **** if I pull up to the party and throw it up in neutral and rev a V-6 or a V-8 just to make a statement?

how bout this idea, buy v6er thats got a beat motor, swap in a motor from a TTA or grand national. insurance will be for a v6 car and you will probably beat a lot of the v8 cars.

Got excited for a second.. thoughs someone was putting a 231 turbo buick v6 in an fbody.. true story on the insurance.. is shouldnt be much cheaper (if at all, cause it is still a sports car) with the 6 and you will not like the power at all.. Get the 8 or get a 'going to college, need transpo' ride.. v6 in fbodies are lame..

speaking of grand nationals i raced one last weekend, he was a co worker, he has an 87 black grand national, he bought it new, we went on a long stretch of road, i actually beat him off the line and on the highway, he did keep up, but i kept pulling more and more, he then told me his car was runing too rich or something, and that he will race me again, he was very upset, especially when he told everyone at work that he could beat me, i was actually impressed and surprized that i beat him. and lets go back to the suject.....DONT get a v6, if you did buy one and one day one of your freinds bought an lt1 and took you for a ride your gonna hate it. and for whoever stated that a v6 is 15.2 in the qurter mile ( or whatever) and the lt1 does 14.6 then you must be on something, there is a much bigger gap in times between the v6 and lt1.

ya, what zeee is saying is definitely true, i have owned both, my 3.4L v6 ran mid 16s, my friends 3.8L mildly modded v6 runs high 15s and my Z28 ran a 13.7 out of the box, those are more realistic numbers for ya. no flame intended, just throwin out more numbers from my personal expierience.

What I would do is, talk to the insurance company, get a quote on a v6 and a v8 car that your looking at for the same year. Take the price difference, and see if that is more or less than how much it would cost for a v6-v8 conversion. If you do it yourself it should be lower, having it done might cut it close, might not depending on your company/coverage/driving record. If doing it yourself, make sure you add in EVERYTHING that your going to need for the conversion, plus around $500 for stuff you forgot. My 97 for full coverage a year is 6,900$ with drivers ed, defensive driving, 1 accident, 2 years driving, and an age of 19. My last car was just the basic coverage and only paid 3,200 before defensive driving, no abs no airbag. Say you get the engine and trans off of ebay or something for 4,500 LS1 w/ 4L60E free shipping auction # 2426969161.
I believe with that all you would need is a new engine mounts and DS $150 + shipping BIN ebay(not sure have only done a v6-v8 in an 87.
Do it yourself price:
4,500
+ 150 DS
+ 500 stuff I forgot + engine mounts
5,150

The conversion for me would pay itself off in less than 2 years, plus I get to say I did it myself.

You could change insurance companies to Progressive. They told me there was no difference in insuring a V6 or a V8. The main thing, it was still a sports car that is really fast. So the Lt1 was a no brainer for me.

Exactly. Finish school, and you'll have all kinds of money later to buy something hotter.

a V6 f-body is the dumbest thing ever IMHO.

Its like a 4 banger pickup truck- yea it may look cool and no one will ever know the differance- but its completely poinless. might as well hop in acivic or something.

honestly, id be looking at a maxima, grand prix GTP,V6 accord ect ect over a V6 f-body.

At those power levels, torque teer isnt' an issue, and those cars are a lot better built than f-bodies. insuance will be less, you arn't a cop magnet and hell, they might be faster!

A v6 camaro is a familys disadvantages and sports cars disadvantes without any advantages from either category expect the looks/image. hopefully your ***** isn't undersized and you can make the right choice.

dont overextend yourself over a freaking car. there are far more important things in life. I'm paying a **** ton in insurance on a 03 silverado and the payments and working on the camaro project. I dont have a problem making the payments at all, but $600 -$800 a month can buy a lot beer and i could have a lot more fun in general. Buy lots of toys like compuers, Tv's quads, sport bike, clothes and such.

Sometimes I wish i wasn't so dedicated to the camaro o i would have just bought a $5000 s-10 instead of $35,000 truck Not only is there the financial aspect- but also maintiance. Just the other day i got a tree branch that bent my trucks 1/4 pannel, went through my bumper fasica, punctured my skid plate and brought to a crashing hault by my cast iron engine block- not before it cracked my grille and headlight mounts though. on a $5000 beater truck its a $50 trip to the junk yard and $5 or duct tape! On this truck, its stressfll as hell.

I wish i would have listened to the advice given to me against buying this truck.
Good luck, hopefully you will make the right choice.

I went from a 6 to an 8 and there is a huge difference, especially in torque. but I'm in my 30's so insurance is no big deal.
