From LT1 to v6.

Ive been thinking about getting a firebird and the trans ams are too expensive on insurrance for a 19 year old.. I want to find one of the 5 speed firebirds with a v6 in the 98-02 range, am I going to notice alot of loss in power? I really like the look of the 98-02 firebirds so I really want one.. I don't race my car so thats not going to be a problem.. I drive back and forth from college so that will save me some gas money too.. thanks!

my v6 5spd camaro is up for sale, do you have an LT1 car?

my camaro ran 15.2 @ 91 mph with 2.4 60ft in 96 degree temp. bone stock. with some decent tires it would be a high 14 second car.

if you wanna work out a trade we could do something

Don't do it, the difference in power is astronomical. Go drive a V6 bird and then find someone with a V8 and have them take you for a ride. You'll never even look at V6's again.

Ive got an LT1 car and a v6,
I drive the V6 everyday,
insurance is 1/2
87 octane
25 mpg

the difference in power is noticeable, my v6 runs good though so
your average lt1 runs 14.4- 14.6s 95-97mph stock,
my v6 runs 15.2 at 91.

yes, i miss driving my LT1 everyday, but the extra $ in my pocket is nice

i have a 94 z28 right now but my brother is buying it so Im trying to find a new car.. i was looking at trans ams but the insurrance is probably gonna be HIGH because the ones I like are 98-02s.. so one option is to buy a 5 speed v6.. just not sure.. I know I want a firebird though the front ends look sweet..

If you are willing to do the work, buy a V6 car. Then get a wrecked V8 car from the junk yard. Put the V8 parts in the V6 car. Take the V6 car to the insurance company and have them insure it as a V6. They won't know the difference. Lots cheaper insurance. They base the insurance off the VIN, so they would price it as a V6.

I had a friend who did this with a Mustang. He wrecked his modded 5.0. So, he bought a cheap 4-banger Mustang and swapped all the parts over. According to the insurance it was an econo car. And that "four banger" car could run 10s on street tires. Well it did have a 351 and a big blower....

But really, is the insurance that much higher that it would be worth it?

that track must have a special !traction mod for the v8's .... cause those are some ****ty times for a stock LT1, and incredible times for a v6...

pass whatever it is your smoking my way

There will be a big difference in power, but for your situation the V6 is the perfect solution. It will cost you a lot less money overall. Just what you need during your college years.

I can't say for sure but you may run a slight chance at voiding you insurance claim if the car isn't what the VIN represents, insurance companies love to find loopholes to get out of paying for claims. You may wanna check up on that cause like I said, I'm not sure. My agent told me that a Formula Firebird with a V8 and the V6 Firebird cost pretty much the same to insure whereas the TA would be higher, gas mileage is not dramatically different between the V8's and 6's either my wife's Grand Am GT barely gets better mileage than mine before I modded it.

1. I agree 100% with these times being way off!!!

2. also think you would be happier with a V8

3. I've actually gotten 25MPG with my LT1 going 85 on the highway, and only stopping 3 times.

afaik, the vin is same for t/a and formula on 4th gen cars... my t/a is listed as a formula whereever i pull up the vin. and your insurnace may actually be cheaper with the 94z than with a 98 on up v6
