LT1 to SBC Conversion?

Is there anyway to use the lt1 block itself and and use SBC heads and intake and deleting the Opti? If its possible I figure you may have to you use a different computer.

I just want an 8 cylinder thats more reliable than the LT1 because the Opti is possibly the biggest piece of junk ever to face the planet. I really don't care about power loss I just want to know if its possible and what parts I could possible reuse IE (block, pistons, etc.)

Any help or info or links would be greatly appreciated.

The opti has been into the 9s on a bunch of cars. If you can't get it to work, find or become a better mechanic.

Its not just the opti I have an MSD opti that works fine, I'm just sick of the LT1 motor and its complications, and I want a SBC so I can design it myself. I would also like to put a SBC roots blower on it, so I just want to know if its possible to convert the block to a sbc block.

I wouldn't say a lot of experience, I would say above average, I understand how they work, I've taken them apart, put them back together, I understand the concept of boring/polishing and zero planing the deck, etc.

I just figure the SBC would require less frequent maintence, and theres a lot more options for a regular SBC than LT1s which are kind of in their own classification.

how long have you owned your LT1?

sounds like you need to get to know it a little better and get to know the parts selection that is out there... just cause it doesn't say "fits LT1" doesn't mean it wont.

i'd stick with the LT1 before i went back to a trad SBC - atleast in a 4th gen fbody.

if you wanna run the old school go pick up a different car

I've had it for over 5 years, I did a motor swap once already, and last summer I redid all of the motor gaskets cause my rear main was leaking so I just replaced all the gaskets, intake manifold, header gaskets, head gaskets, oil pan gaskets, all the timing gaskets etc. I'm pretty familiar with it, have quite a few performance parts on it, just really sick of the lt1

Good luck trying to fit a roots style blower on an F-body

Why not get an LS1 and go to coil packs...

like it was said before, if you cant get your opti to work, then find someone who can. Also I find it wierd that your MSD opti worked fine, but you said right before that the opti was a big pos. So what other complications were you talking about that you have run into...a leaky rear main seal??? LOL get used to it cause its a common problem on SBC... The LT1 was a far superior motor to any SBC that was made previously so I guess when your done designing your "roots blower motor" give the rest of us your experiences so we can all improve on our LT1s...

your all over the place man...get a 52 pickup and put your SBC in that...

yea I realize that you can make anything fit, but there is a significant amount of fabrication involved there. I hardly think that setup is a commonality

Other than the Opti (which not everyone sees as a "complication"), and the need to carefully bleed the cooling system, what other "complications" do you attribute to the LT1?

Yes, there are people who convert the LT1 heads and intake to work on a Gen 1 SBC, with a distributor to eliminate the Opti. There are many better heads available for the Gen 1 SBC, so I have to assume you already have a lot of money invested in your current LT1 heads. After that, you need to determine how you plan to control the timing and the fuel. Are you looking at a conventional distributor and a carb? If not, what engine management system are you thinking of?

The Lt1 has many benefits over the standard sbc's, you can run much more compression, or perhaps more boost in your desired setup. You have the serp belt system with a internal driven water pump, and the fuel economy of FI, and tunability and modulation of various parameters through the pcm.
