LT1 Running rough

Hey, I got a 96 Z28 auto...113,000KM

I bought MSD 8.5 Wires, with Delco Platinums... I got them put on by a mechanic, and car ran beautifully for the first day or two, then suddenly the car started to run like a bag of #$%^...

A couple weeks back I got the water pump replaced because it was leaking. Hopefully it didnt damage the opti<-- what does that mean anyways?

I get a blinking engine light too but only when accelerating but when I am at a cruising speed it goes away.... Got a scanner on it, and there were no codes!

WTF is going on!!!

I just want my car to run smooth again

Re: LT1 Running rough

No one told you about the Opti! Wow. It's short for the Opti-Spark distributor. It's located behind the waterpump. It's sandwiched in the worst location possible. If your waterpump leaked, odds are it leaked on the Opti. The Opti is usually the first culpret with ignition issues. For your sake I hope it's not, if you first got the car and it's out..you'll be dropping some money down to have it replaced. Or, you can have a learning experience it and do it yourself.

It looks intimidating, but it goes quite smoothly if you take your time. Have it scanned. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the OBDII will throw a light if there's opti trouble.

Do you know of any modifications to the car? More info would help.

don'tttttttt jump on the opti wagon!!!!!!!

lets use some basic troubleshooting here! If the water happend a few WEEKS ago we can just say its the opti.

if your check engine light is flashing, get some codes and come back.

Either that or one of your plug wires got too close to your exhaust manifold and burned through the insulation and is arcing against it. Mine did that with 2 sets of MSD's. Very easy to do especially if you route them wrong and don't zip tie them in place.

Re: LT1 Running rough

sounds like the mechanic didnt tie the wires away from the exhaust man. and one or two got burnt. start the car at night and open the hood with as little lighting around as possible and look for some arching. good luck

Do this. I immediately thought plug wires also. The check engine light is probably for "misfires" from the plug wires arcing.

The SES light will flash when a missfire is picked up a solid SES light is not a missfire.

Flashing SES light is a particular cylinder that is misfiring, solid SES light following the flashing one would more than likely be a Multiple/Random misfire. I've been running into the same problems.

If the MIL or SES light is on, there's a code...if the SES light is off when you scan it, there won't be a code. You need an OBDII scanner to pull it. You can buy a cheap one from the parts store for around $80 or around $200 for one that gives you real-time sensor read-outs and a lot of other things. Plug it in to the diagnostic port, drive around until your SES light flashes, then scan for the code. It will tell you exactly which cylinder is misfiring. P0301-P0308 are for cylinders 1 through 8.

Here's a link to the thread I posted; you might find some help there; http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=460597
