Rather than pull the valve cover just take the oil filler cap off and look inside. You can see the rockers from there.
takes 5 mins..check it out

Re: lt1 revving to 7k+

check ur tranny fluid. wut color is it????? And r u sure ur pulling that high or it feels like it. i just bought a 94 stock w/ 90k miles on it 2 months ago and was befuddled when my engine revved to 6500-7000 rpms. Sure enough the fluid was brown and im sure its never been changed. I also took the tranny to the shop and the owner told me nothing was wrong with it that it was a regular piece of **** electronic tranny that goes on bec of ur tps telling it to. so who knows but i personally think its a 94 thing.....we have problems. first year with that damn tranny.

A stock car cannot rev to past ~5800 rpm, the computer will not let it.

Re: lt1 revving to 7k+

LOL, I never noticed it before until a few days ago........I've had the car for about a month now ('94 Z28 A4) and a couple days ago I was playing around and goin' up and down this straight piece of road we have around here that me and my friends use for races........from a stop and just flooring the throttle.....my tach went up to about 5800, right inside where the red dotted lines start......I was panicking but I guess it's nothing out of the ordinary.....I didn't realize the shift from 1st to 2nd came at that high of RPMs with a wide open throttle.

I guess that's just how it is!

The engine speed is limited by the PCM. Your PCM sees a different reading than your tach, maybe your tach is way way off. I find it suprising that its that far off though.

My tach reads about 200 rpm slow, so i would say 6000 -6100 would be normal. But 6700 rpm is way out of whack.

I don't think so.......it never made it into the solid red line. It was right about at 5800.

Because when I asked a few days ago in this forum at what point does the A4 tranny shift from 1st to 2nd, I was told 5500-5800 (i think, you can try to find that thread if you want) so that was that.

Now that others are saying it, I'm sure that it's correct. I really don't think I went past the middle of the segment of dotted red lines when I was running open throttle.

I wouldn't say that there's anything deathly wrong with your engine or anything........it's just something with your tach I would assume.

But this is with a wide open throttle?

Hmm.....well, I don't know what to tell you. As long as the engine seems to be alright and you don't notice anything funny about it, I'd say you're probably ok.

Re: lt1 revving to 7k+

You tach must be way out of calibration. I didnt think they got that far out but they must since a few people have posted saying so.

Actual rpm is probably normal, you are just getting a false reading on the tach.
