lt1 revving to 7k+
lt1 revving to 7k+
Should by engine (94 lt1) be revving up to 7k? I dont know whether the previous owner tweaked it or not, but it revs really high really quickly and sometimes sits at 6500-7000 for a good 2-3 second to gain an extra 10-15 mph. Is the lt1 able to handle these higher rpm's or should i edit it and take it down a bit?
Re: lt1 revving to 7k+
Your car might have been a cammed car at one point. Is it stock as far as you know? A stock tune has the revlimiter set at 5800 rpm. If you are actually reving to 6800-7000 rpm it must be an after market tune and has atleast stiffer valve springs. Your stock springs would be floating valves at that RPM. You would probably notice it.
Re: lt1 revving to 7k+
The guy i bought it from said that it might have had a cam. From how it pulls and sounds, i doubt that its too stock, but i also doubt that it has that much done to it. From the physical looks it seems like he knew what was going on, but i dont know about the internals. So far i've revved it up that high a good 25-30 times (hotrod nationals came to town) and no sign of any problems. I'm actually getting scared thinking that it might blow on me next time it happens. But everytime i put the pedal down to raise it mroe than 4k it just jumps straight to 6 and climbs like crazy. The motor really really pulls at this point which leads me to think that he cammed it and tuned it for the higher rpm's.
How would i be able to see the difference in the valve springs? are th oem ones a certain color or what? I would think that if the stock ones would be caput at these higher rpm's then he must have done some stuff for me already.

Re: lt1 revving to 7k+
tach is from the v8. and i'm way ahead of you pon the cooling it. in fact i'm parking the car and ripping the engine apart in a week or so to do a few things and see what exactly i ahve on my hands.
Re: lt1 revving to 7k+
your tach is off anyway, i know mine is off by about 800 rpms. pull the valve covers. if the rocker arms are not like stamped steel or look new, chances are you did not buy a stock vehicle
Re: lt1 revving to 7k+
I think its stock the tach is just off. IMO I think if i had a car i was trying to sell i would make sure to tell the people interested in it know the mods i did to it. I mean seriosly would you sell someone your cammed up car and tell them its stock?? Not me..people want performance it sells better.
Re: lt1 revving to 7k+
actually the car wasn't originally the persons that i bought it from, he bought it wrecked. He said that his friend in another state owned the car and that he thought he cammed it, but this was already after i was going to purchase the car and was there to pick it up. There would be no reason for himto ahve lied to me about a cam when he already had the cash in his hand.
The tach might be off... so i think i might change that a bit :P, and for the valve covers, i'll get a peak some time this week to see for sure.

Re: lt1 revving to 7k+
If there's a dyno near you, take it there and make a pull to 6500 and see what happens. That'll tell you exactly what you really do have on your hands. Some cams make good power and barely lope. Yours could be one of those. I'd be curious myself.

bunker's car revs to 7k consistently, stock bottom end with heads and cam. if your car pulls to 7k and doesnt lag, then you must have some sort of cam and valve train on there.
