LT1 rear seal leak question

I bought a 97 Z28-SS with 67000, miles! Both the front and rear seals leak oil from the engine.

Just wonderd if the LT-1 was known for rear and front seal leaks?

Not really. No more than any chevy SB. The intakes are prone to leak though. Sure you don't have a intake gasket leak?

Rear main is a bitch to change.

FYI... When you do change the rear seal, run your finger nail over the area where the seal was riding on the crank. If you can feel a slight groove you should install a metal sleeve over the crank or the new seal won't do its job for very long.

Re: LT1 rear seal leak question

what he ^ said. Its called a crank saver. you probably wont need it. Its probably your rear intake gasket area. Check that first with a mirror if you can. There are 3 seals on the front timing cover. Opti, water pump, and crank seals and also the oil pan gasket. It could just be the front also, leaking back and making it look like the rear is leaking.

Re: LT1 rear seal leak question

Thanks for the help guys, i will have my performance guy check over the engine for intake leaks. He did say both seals are leaking! I will have him check for the groove as well.

I bought the car pretty cheap, the car looks about new inside and out, for a 9 year old car, it was well taken care of.
I was amazed with how much low end power the car has, out of the hole the z28 is just about as fast as both my 99 and 03 Ford Lightnings!

I'm pretty sure the car is stock, but it does have a body kit and after market hood, and 18" rims with new Toyo 18-40-245's up front and 18-35-295's in the back.

For mods i would like to do a cold air and rear gears!

Re: LT1 rear seal leak question

Fairly common for the front leak to be the water pump drive gear seal.
