LT1 Ram-Air Airbox

I have a '97 WS6 and the airbox that seals to the underside of the hood is looking a little dingy. I know the LS1 guys have custom airbox lids they can buy, but do the LT1 guys have anything? I would like to get something new because the original stock one isn't the most beautiful. I didn't know if there are any aftermarket ones or only OEM ones. Any input will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Jeremy

No aftermarket ones that I know of.

What looks dingy.... the top of the air box, the seal for the air box to the hood, or both? If the seal isn't torn, and the box isn't cracked, it would seem like something like Mothers "Back to Black" would restore things to the original condition. I have the SLP box, identical except for the logos, and the seal is a cheaper weather stripping - which I attached to the hood rather than the box. But just cutting the grid out of the box seemed to provide a much more agressive appearance.

Hey Fred, what did you use to cut yours out. I cut mine out, but I need to smooth out the edges to make it look better, any ideas?

A dremel is your friend.

I cut well beyond the "grid" because I didn't have to worry about the "Pontiac" and "Ram Air" logos. I laid it out with a scribe, drilled the large radius corners with a wood bit, and used a Dremel with a cut-off wheel to cut the straight lines between the holes.

Wow, I was thinking about doing this over the weekend....

I took the airbox off to clean my maf, and noticed that there was only discoloration just under the "slits" from where the air was entering. It seems like for how big the box/filter is, only a very small area is used due to the design of the slits. I'm probably going to open mine up as well once I replace the stock paper filter w/ a K&N.

Is there any other way to get more air into the box from the vents in the hood?

I've de-baffled the hood and removed about 3/4 of the slats on the airbox with a dremel and razor blade..

My intake track is such that if I remove the K&N I can look into the hood and see the TB blades...

Can you elaborate on the de-baffling?

97FormulaWS-6,

I really like your fernco couplers from the maf to tb, are those just 3" couplers? Mine are getting old.

There are 2 baffles in the WS6 hood to prevent rain from entering the airbox....

I've completely removed the front baffle, and cut the back baffle down...

Did this with a combination of a body-saw, dremel, and cut-off wheel...

I also re-located the airbox seal the the hood instead of having it glued to the airbox... just used some other weatherstripping and glued it to the hood. WOrks awesome and the airbox looks so much better without that gasket on it.

Yup, Fernco 3" couplers... put them in some boiling water for about 2 minutes, then just stretch them over the MAF/TB/Airbox (Airbox only due to the Z06 MAF)

Mine's already got the weatherstripping on the hood, the hood was obviously aftermarket because it's a ws6 style hood on a formula. I was hoping that the baffles were bolted down, but I guess they are molded into the hood by what you're saying. My car will probably see rain occasionally, so I don't know if it's a good idea cutting away at my hood if I can't put it back to stock. I'm definetly going to cut some of the airbox up, it looks like a MAJOR restriction with those tiny vents, and that box is barely taking advantage of the huge surface area of the filter.

FYI the Firehawks came with the seal on the hood, at least in 97 anyway.
