lt1 pining
lt1 pining
hi my 383 lt1 makes pining sounds when it warms up, it doesnt do it cold. So im wondering if a 160*t stat and new ac delco o2 sensors will help prevent it. i thought it had bad gas at first, but that wasn't the problem. i always run 92 octane gas. Other than the new t stat and sensors im running out of ideas
, could it be that my quench height is wrong? Originally it came with 10.4 compression with .47 thick gaskets. im thinking if my new .39 thick gaskets could be the problem also.

Re: lt1 pining
Do you possible mean a "pinging" sound?
What is the new static compression ratio - you can't just go by the gasket thickness. When you build a 383, lots of other things that affect static compression ratio change. You also have to consider dynamic compression ratio, which is a function largely of valve overlap. What cam are you running?
Who tuned it, and did they alter the knock retard settings? If you can hear knock (which is different than a "ping", but much more common on modern engines) either your knock retard system has been severely limited, or you have a huge amount of knock.
Are you sure its not an exhaust leak - that can sound just like "ping"?

Re: lt1 pinging
yes pinging lol, sorry for the spelling. Well i had the motor built at a local machine shop with 10.4 compression, it was fine before the head gasket blew. when i fixed it i put a thinner gasket and the heads were re-serficed. maybe i didn't get the quench right. the cam is a comp cam 503 with 1.6 rockers. Pcm for less tuned it so i dont know what they did with the knock retard system. when i bought it i think the knock sensor was disabled. i guess ill check for exhaust leaks. And what do you think about shells ethanol, should i get diffarent gas? maybe the new 02 sensors will help, ill find out tonight
