LT1 Mods - Easy?

Hello everyone,

I am looking into buying a junkyard LT1 (of a 95 Z28) for my project truck, since it is a junkyard engine and I do not know how reliable it is I will be rebuilding it. However I want to beef that sucker up, I want to beef it up to a 383 stroker, here are some of the things I want to do:

Cam, Headers, LT4 Intake, 90mm Throttle body, KN&N Intake, not to mention more cubic inches.

My main question is... will the computer need to be modified or re-calibrated to work with these kinds of modifications? If so, how expensive is it to mess with the computer (if you have a shop do it)?

Any words of wisdom from all LT1 fans who have modified their engines welcome! Knowledge is power - Share the wealth!

- Johnny

you absolutely will need a tune. are you getting the entire computer harness with the motor? if not go to painless and get a stand alone hot rod computer. you can get a mail order chip and itll get it pretty close, itll be fine to drive around. if you want the most absolute power possible get a dyno tune.

Do some research.....

LT4 intake wont work, and its not an improvement.
90mm TB is for LSx engines.

Do heads with the cam

Tuning the computer is not a big deal, but will need to be done if you are going to add a cam, headwork, and more cubic inches. A mail order tune would run you around 150 bucks, a dyno tune which you would dial you in a little more precisely will run more though.

Couple of thoughts on your plans....

You can not use an LT4 intake with LT1 heads, unless you have either the LT4 intake or the LT1 heads machined to eliminate the interference between the top of the LT4 raised intake runners and the LT1 head valve cover rail. After you get all done with the machine work, you will have accomplished little, if anything, because as-cast the LT4 runners are virtually identical to the LT1 intake runners. Save your money - have the LT1 heads and intake ported together, and get a cam package to match the headwork.

How will you attach a 90mm single bore throttle body to an intake manifold that stock has dual 52mm throttle bores?

Typically, you would buy a throttle body with dual 52mm bores or 54mm bores, or bore the intake to 58mm and use a 58mm TB:

Your right, don't know what I was thinking bout the 90mmLSX. But as far as the LT4 intake, so it's not much of an improvement huh? Hmm.. so would I be better off just with simple "basic" mods; like cam, heads, headers??

There are a couple diff. places that offer great heads and cam packages for the lt1 engine. Can not remember the exact web sites at the moment but maybe sombody else will have links to them. And as injuneer said, lt4 intake would not be worth it. But once you get ahold of whoever you are going to have do your heads/cam you would be best off to ask them any questions about what else you need as they are best to tell you.
