LS1's may get better gas mileage but I drive my cousins LS1 sometimes and eventhough it traps 105Mph with just a cutout, I would NEVER trade my low end torque monster LT1 for an LS1.
Just my thoughts.
I get a crappy 12 MPG with only city driving, strickly short trips (no highways here on this little island )

Dont know RWHP but runs steady low 13s.

Just stick with the M6 and you can't go wrong with gas mileage be it LT1 or LS1, unless you leave it in 2nd gear all day. With 3.42 gearing, I turn 2000 RPM at 80 Mph.

How exactly did you rebuild the engine? A bigger cam and better flowing heads with high compression will require more gas. Also, how far are you pushin the pedal?

stock internals, new rings and bearings. 11:1 compression. i'm sure my 14mpg city is a result of being throttle happy all the time...

94 Z28, 105K miles, 6 speed, mods as follows: homemade 4" CAI, ported/polished MAF, !donkey dong elbow, LT4 PP, SLP LT1 clutch disc, 96 SS exhaust, and my own custom tuning. I also have about 150 extra pounds in stereo equipment.

HP estimated at about 290-300 at the engine, probably 260-270 RWHP. Probably about 340-350 ft-lbs. at the engine, probably 300-310 RWTQ.

Mileage is 19-20 in the city, 30+ on the highway. I don't know who says that LS1 get better gas mileage, I get just as good mileage as they do. Last time I filled up a full tank (15 gallons) I got over 450 miles of mostly highway driving, 5 passes at a 1/4 mile track, and some city driving. And this is all on a car that needs new plugs and wires. I used to get like 22 MPG before my plugs started to need replacing.

On my old 93 Z28 Indy 500 Pace Car with a Powerdyne supercharger, Borla y-pipe and Flowmaster cat-back, SLP chip, Jacobs ignition:

26-28 mpg highway
16 mpg city
(overall average was 17.4 mpg after 50K miles)
probably making around 400-425hp at the crank
3.23 gears
A4

If you're thinking about a V6 to V8 swap, you better check with your DMV because in a lot of places it's no longer legal to change the configuration and they will fail it during inspection. LS1 engines are pretty expensive still. You could get a 93 or 94 Z28 for $3-5000 easily.

Florida doesn't have an emmissions testing or inspections anymore. The reasoning being old cars didn't have to pass it, and new cars already meet emmissions guidelines. So I get to setup an offroad cam setup and exhaust with whatever I get.
