LT1 First Rebuild
LT1 First Rebuild
So I have a 1995 Z28 LT1 with basic bolt-ons. I've got Hooker Longtube headers into 4" flowmasters exaust, K&N Kit, underdrive pully, 3.73 rear end (rebuilt all internals), and an LT1 tuner. This car is my daily driver so I don't want to go too far. It has 80,000 miles and basically my valvetrain is getting a bit noisy, but it still produces a fair amount of power. I have a tick coming from the left rear cylinder under the valve cover. I wanted some advice on what I should do as far as a rebuild is concerned. Would it be okay to have the top end rebuilt, hardened pushrods, new rockers, lifters, cam, and freshen up the heads? I'm not looking to make a crazy ammount of power as this will be my daily driver. However, I'm trying to avoid having to pull the engine and do the bottom end as well. I've never built an LT1 or any 350 for that matter. Although I have rebuild smaller engines, quads, dirt bikes, and medium size tractors. I think with some direction I could do this myself. Any reccomendations would be greatly appreciated. References, parts, advice, etc. Thanks!
I'd pull the heads and have them resurfaced and have the valve ground. then put new rockers. a cam would b nice and help the power. I have the CC501 with stock pushrods, 1.6 rockers, and stock heads. that should get rid of the tick ur hearing..
Make sure you diagnose that tick before you go any further. I had a tick in my motor we thought was a lifter. It ended up being a cracked piston that came apart ground everything to a halt.
Thanks,
Tony

Is there an easy way to tell the difference between valve train and bottom end? With the hood closed I can hear the tick bounce off the pavement. It increases and decreases with engine speed. It's definitely a ticking sound and not a knock. I also tried searching for an exhaust leak and couldn't find one.
That's a tough one, I had both a valve tick and an exhaust leak on the driver side. The exhaust leak sounds JUST like a valvetrain ticking kinda sound, my leak was at the collector on stock headers, there's a 3 bolt ring and one bolt was um.. MIA lol. Needless to say it's come loose a few times and every time it sounds like a valve tick.
As for the valvetrain noise, I've got 177k on the clock and all my internals are still original, although noisy heh.. You might post a quick video on somewhere like Youtube so we can listen?
Good luck!

Okay I had someone else look at the car too. He confirmed that it's a lifter tick. So now I'm wondering what is a good cam to put with stock heads? I'm planning on going ahead with the top end rebuild. Whats a good list of compatable parts?
