LT1 Driving me crazy

For those of you that don't know, I have an LT1 in my Jeep. I use this for trail riding. It does awesome MOST of the time. It's alot of starting and stopping. Drive a little bit and stop, get out and watch, restart and go again. Well I noticed yesterday that it was doing great and then all of a sudden it started to turn over and over and over. Then it finally fired. Then the next time it took forever to finally fire, and threw a check engine light. Fan cut on and I was a little afraid to cut it off again. Well I did. I let it sit for about 30 minutes and then when it cranked up just fine. No check engine light on at all. Turned it off when we got finished. It set there for a few hours and then I cranked it to come home and it did fine. I found a couple of hose clamps that were bad on the radiator hoses a while back and I fixed them. Since then the problem had went away and it was doing really well. Now I think its back to throwing a code and not starting so well. Would this be a DTC 36 (high pulse resolution) code? If so, I have a new distributor sitting here that I bought a while back. Would it just start to come and go like that?

It could, did you hit any big puddles that could have gotten the distributor wet?

It would be best to pull the codes rather than playing the guessing game.

I never got a code when mine went. All I know is that when the car was warmed up that's when I would have issues. Once the car sat a while it would fire right back up. Any backfiring?

Apparently this can happen, a check engine SES light, without a code. I have it too, and the dealership has no idea why. They suspect that the PCM should be replace to start, but could not guarantee that it would fix the problem. It cost me 140 bucks for them to tell me that.

Nope no puddles at all. I like to think that motor and my Jeep are Hydrophobic. But you got it, once it was warm was when it was having the issue. When it set for a little while it would fire right away. So with that being said, just replace the opti? Before it was giving the DTC 36 and it was said that a leaking radiator would infact be an acceptable cause of this code. I had that leaking radiator. But now it is doing the same thing and the radiator isn't leaking. SO I going to pull the codes asap and see which one it is.

Re: LT1 Driving me crazy

DTC is loss of high resolution pulse signal from the cam position sensor in the Opti. The only way a leaking radiator would cause that is if its shorting the harness connector, or somehow flooded the back of the distributor. And DTC 36 does not shut down the engine.

An Opti can have "went" without setting a code if the problem is the high voltage section - cap/rotor. There are no codes for that portion, only for the cam position sensor.

Could have been a problem with heat soak of the ICM, the cam position sensor or the fuel pump. Check the fuel pressure. If it was the ICM or the Opti, you will probably find the code related.
