I picked up a 95 TA convertible roller stupid cheap a couple of days ago. (traded an LS1 intake, stock exhaust, and oil pan for it) Its been quite a while since I've done anything with LT1's and wanted to see what my options are for putting this car back on the road as cheaply as possible. Its an A4 car, so I am aware I need to choose a replacement transmission and wiring harness carefully, as there are differences year to year. There's a wrecked 93 TA that I can pick up cheap that has a good driveline. As long as I use the 93 trans, harness, PCM and engine, does anybody know if I will have problems putting them in my car that has 95 body and interior electronics? There's also a 96 motor out there I can pick up really cheap. Are there differences in the engine electronics year to year? or will any year engine work as long as you match the correct year trans, PCM and wiring harness to it? Other than swapping tailshafts, would a LT1/4L60E combo from a caprice be a direct drop in? Any advice on the best way to attack this project would be greatly appreciated.

 

93 is speed density (no MAF), batch fire injectors (not sequential), 1-wire unheated O2 sensors (not 4-wire heated), controls only the engine, not the trans (as opposed to 94 up and the 4L60E controls), tach driven by coil (not PCM), limited speedo adjustments (not programmable), programming via replaceable ship (not flash), unvented Opti . 93 is actually called an ECM (engine control module, not a powertrain control module). If you put a 93 power train in the 95, it would probably work OK, but there would be mismatches to the body harness, which you can review by looking at Shoebox's body harness pinouts, by model year:

96 is a whole new problem. 95 is OBD-1, 96 is OBD-2. A 96 4L60E is not compatible with a 95 PCM. You could run the 96 engine with the 95 PCM though, switching the 95 knock sensor to the 96, and ignoring the 96's crank position sensor, EVAP vacuum switch and after-cat O2 sensors. You will use the 95 harness, so that eliminates the body harness interface problems. But the 95 PCM will only work with a 95 trans.
