lt1 balancer
lt1 balancer
Im going to order a balancer tonight for my LT1 motor.... which do i get, i notice there are different sizes and stuff.. im looking to spend $80-120 -- so if its oem, or whatever thats alright...
You may find this passage from Doug Anderson useful:
HUB AND BALANCER
The balancer is a two-piece assembly with a pulley that bolts onto the hub. Separating the two made it easier to install the Optispark distributor on the assembly line and out in the field. The holes in the hub are offset, so the balancer only fits on it one way, but there’s no keyway in the hub to index the hub on the crank. This shouldn’t be a problem unless the damper was drilled at the factory to "trim" the final engine assembly.
If it was drilled a lot to compensate for an engine that was out of balance, you could end up with a shaker, depending on how everything stacked up with the remanufactured engine compared to the original engine. If you encounter a balance problem on a remanufactured LT1, try rotating the balancer assembly on the crank 90° at a time to see if it eliminates the problem.
All 3 of the OEM balancers that I have, have been heavily drilled. They are 7.5".
I replaced one with the Fluidamper but I like the ATI better.
Hope this helps. If not just verbally flog me LOL

The ATI Super Damper is about $385.
Summit carries an LT1 specific harmonic damper made by Pioneer, for $116. PN PIO-872013. No indication that it is SFI-rated, if that is a requirement for you application.
Just curious why you are not using the stock one.

well i dont have thestock one, this project i started off with nothing, ive gotten every part from either summit/ local friends/ or ebay.. first thing i bought was the long block.. about a year ago.. and ive been getting parts for it ever since to work in my 83..
so if the stock balancer is good, i can get that... what is the pulley gear for? does that eliminate the underdrive pulley that i bought for $90.00 =/... lemme know thanks..
