question about 92 corvette, lt1 engine. The water pump went out, guy replaced water pump, serpentine belt(ruined it) and thermostat.DID NOT replace optispark! He has driven it 1000 miles says everything fine.Car has 87,000 miles on it, could old water pump of taken out optispark and it hasnt shown up yet.mine did in my 93z cost me another 600 bucks because my mechanic (of 20 years) didnt replace optispark after putting in waterpump. are vettes the same? could I buy it and in say 6 months optispark trouble starts. let me know. thanks
usually in my experiences they go out pretty quick if water is the culprit for taking them out... if he has driven it a considerable amount of time i wouldnt think it would be going out soon as a result of the water pump failure
Corvette LT1 has the same design as F-body LT1 so obviously there is the possibility. However, believe it or not opti's aren't the bad. It is a possibility, but if so, then replace the opti and take care of it and it will last you 200k+ miles.
My original water pump croaked around 1999 or 2000. Dumped about 2 gallons of of coolant over the Opti-spark. As of this morning's drive to work it still runs like a scalded dog on the OEM Opti-spark. YMMV.
