Are LT-1's made to be high rev motors???

Re: Are LT-1's made to be high rev motors???
I don't think the cam really produces any more power after 5800rpm on a stock LT1.. it might even be more like 5500rpm.. The highest I've ever taken mine was around 6000, and that was because I missed a shift for an instant.
With a modified engine though, most of that is meaningless... if you blueprint and balance the bottom end, use good oil, have good fuel delivery, a good air fuel mixture, good cooling, a valvetrain that can take the abuse, without floating valves, etc., and a big enough cam, you can safely take the engine well above stock redline.. then its really more a question of what parts you have in the engine and how long you want them to last.. The higher you rev it, the more wear you'll be putting on it.
I don't think it's unthinkable to turn 7000rpm on a built, maintained LT1.. but I think the engine would probably last longer turning 6000rpm... But hey.. More RPM can mean a lot more power if you use it right

The stock PCM can't run the motor any higher than 7000. But the LT1 is just like any other SBC, there are parts out there to make it spin just about as high as you want, but its going to cost you.
7000 rpm is pretty easy with a 4bolt block, the right fasteners and a good, stable valvetrain.

Actually, it's pretty easy with a two bolt block as well.
If you want to rev "street" high, and by that I mean up to about 8000rpm, you want to pay close attention to the block. Align honing, balancing, etc. But you can do that on a two bolt block, although I would suggest starting with a well seasoned block. Kight weight reciprocating assy parts is a good idea as well.
Short stroke SBC's will rev to about 14,000 before the cylinder walls start collapsing. That requires a lot of work though, and high end parts. I think it was the 287's that people used to use for that, about 25 years ago. Gas ports, auminum rods, etc...
