Ls1 coil convertion

Alright i have a 96 Z28 and i found a Ls1 wreck. Ive been wanting to do a coil convertion, cuz i keep hearing horor stories from the opti-spark.
What do i have to pick up when i go see the ls1?
Every part i need please list.
thx

Do a search for Bob Bailey.

You'll be overwhelmed with information.

Better yet... http://www.geocities.com/reilym/LTCC/

Just to clarify.... the LTCC is an "add on" unit that you buy from Bailey. It uses the Opti low resolution pulse signal, and the stock PCM to drive 8 LS1 coils in direct fire. The LTCC does not eliminate or replace the Opti. It simply takes the high voltage function out of the case and uses only the optical sensor portion.

The only parts you need from the LS1 are the 8 coils and the plug wires. You can't use the crank or cam position sensors from an LS1 on an LT1.

Fred.. Do you have an idea at what power level an LT1 would really benefit (performance wise) from a 1 coil per cylinder set up?

Most MSD ignition system dyno test have show very little if any power gain through a stronger spark. I dont recall seeing any on forced induction LT1's.
I mean a spark is a spark. Its going to ignite regardless with the same force due to the amount of fuel coming in right?

No, spark is not spark. Raise cylinder pressures with nitrous or a blower and you need much higher voltage to fire the plug/light the mixture. Using 8 individual coils increases the time available to charge the coil for the next spark by a factor of 8. It also allows the coil to discharge over a larger number of degrees of crank rotation, insuring full combustion. With the right computer, it also allows you to adjust timing individually for each cylinder. The quickest LT1 that I am aware of (9.04@155MPH) used 8 LS1 coils. But the others with similar HP levels have manged to get by without that approach.

On a relatively stock engine, I doubt you would see any difference if you compared a "healthy" stock Opti/coil setup to an 8-coil direct fire setup. But the problem is that there many Optis that are not "healthy" and don't stay that way for very long. Getting the high voltage function out of the Opti seems to prolong the life.

Waste of money. The features on the LTCC box SUCK. You would be better off getting a NEW FRESH opti and a Digital 6 or 7 box

You keep hearing horror stories about opti's. Well how many have you ACTUALLY had to replace yourself. The opti isn't that bad.

What features on the LTCC box suck? I currently own an LTCC box and have had no issues to date.

LTCC still needs the opti so how its it better. It the opti goes you still have to replace it.

As smart as you are, you posted this? You know damn well that had NOTHING to do with the opti itself

This coming from someone who has "MANUAL FAN SWITCH" as one of their list of mods

Let's do the math here

LTCC
COST $400 + gotta buy 8 LS1 coil's and misc hardware so prolly around $500
*much stronger ignition at high RPM/boost
*built in adjustable rev limiter / two-step (CANT HAVE BOTH AT THE SAME TIME)
*built in adjustable N2O / boost retard
*CAN'T use rev limiter and stage limiter at the same time
*ALL that MESS of wires in the engine bay
*CAN'T use your STOCK wires.
*PITA to remove valve covers if you decide to mount coils there, which most do!

DIGITAL 6 BOX
COST $280 + like $100 for a burly a$$ coil.

*It's DIGITAL for starters
*Can use stock wires if you want too
*Switch between two rev limits that adjust with rotary switches in 100 rpm increments.
*Single stage retard for nitrous and top end performance.
*Start retard eases pressure on the starter, flywheel and engine.
*Adjustable magnetic pickup compensation produces accurate trigger signals.
*15 Megahertz microcontroller, the fastest of all digital ignitions. What this means is the controller analyzes up to 15,000,000 critical instructions per second! This is over three times the speed of comparable ignitions and produces the most accurate trigger signals, timing and rev limits possible.
*LED display warns of trigger signal problems or faulty charging system.
*Fully potted with polyurethane for vibration and water protection.
*Every spark of the Digital-6 Plus ignition is packed with 135 millijoules of spark energy and up to 535 volts
*Voltage Output Max: Primary: 535 Volts delivered to coil
Secondary: 45,000 Volts (MSD HVC Coil)

oh and don't even get me started on the DIGITAL 7 BOX

yea my post's are ignorant, why? cause I speak from experience

How many of you fools talkin $hit have ACTUALLY HAD BOTH???

yea thought so
