Low Temps
Low Temps
I have a question...i have been logging my car via freescan and it seems that while cruising or sometimes even in stop and go my coolant stays around 159 to 163 degrees CONSTANT...what are the pros and cons of this?
Also my tranny temp stays around 101-106 cruising and rarley can reach 140..pros cons?
thanks

Re: Low Temps
Excessive carbon buildup in the engine, carbon fouled plugs, excessive wear on piston rings, oil sludge, etc.
As far as the tranny goes I am sure the shifting by the pcm may wear out the transmission a little faster, but then again, you don't want the temps soaring into the upper 200s either.
Do you know why it's so low? Don't freak out about the effects I listed, they're basically long term stuff, plus your car is running just a tad cooler than a car with a 160 thermostat (mine runs about 180)- but you should get it fixed, you'll get better gas mileage.

Re: Low Temps
Actually I'm in the same boat ad you, I have a LT1 383 stroker in my 94 T\A, And for the longest time The temp wouldn't get above 160 degrees, that was with a 160 thermostat, Then I did a gear swap and through in a set of 4.11's All the sudden my temp started runnin up to 180 sometimes as high as 195! And after having the car run at 160 for a year the 180-195 worried me, so I started runnin my heater in the dead of summer just to try and keep it as low as possible.... But after talkin to some people I found out that the LT1 is a very warm runnin motor. and I had people in my club that would reach as high as 220 on a normal day... So i stopped worrying about it. But I never did figure out why the motor ran so cool. but a set of 4.11's seemed to fix that problem! maybe this is a perfect reason to get a set!
