Low Oil Pressure

ok so when I first start my car my oil pressure is about 20-25 pounds. After she warms up she drops down to just above the red mark. I have even had the oil light come on. It does raise when you rev it up, but not high enough for my likings. ( I use mobil 1 fully syn 5w30). Question is should i replace my oil pump first? My oil sending unit? Or Is it the gauge itself? Any help please!!!!!

sounds more like a spun bearing(s). try putting on an analoge guage just to make sure your stock guage isn't lying.

Get a new sending unit. Relatively cheap, relatively easy to replace. One of my cars had the same problem, installed a new sending unit and now....I have oil pressure.

how many miles on the car? i have 150k and on 5w30 mobil 1 my oil pressure was way low also, i now use 2 quarts of 5w30 and 3 1/2 quarts of 15w50 and it helps out alot. when the car is warm and idleing it is at 25psi and at 1500 rpms it is around 40psi, try it out and see what happens.

I think the first step im going to take is replacing the sending unit. I have talked to alot of people and they suggested that first. I am also going to probably switch over to atleast 10w30. For some reason I was thinking that low numbers meant thicker oil. For those who dont know.....higher the number the thicker the oil.(being a certified lube tech i should of known this.) must have been out of it when i read that part Thanks for the help guys. ALso it has 132k miles.^^

doesn't matter. the motor could run just hunky dorie with cracked main caps. even if it is a spun bearing the motor could run forever as long as you didn't overwhealm the oil pressure with engine load.
I'd still rather spend some money on an analog guage to tap to the side of the block before buying another sending unit.
Here's a thread on the how to:

Change the oil pressure switch first, its cheap and easy. If you have a 93 or early 94 its above the oil filter...if its a later model its located on the back of the manifold. I had the same issues and as soon as i replaced mine i realized the pressure was normal.

Start with checking your oil pressure with a mechanical guage, theres know need to start throwing parts at it.

I would also take the oil cooler off if you have one. They can be a huge restriction to oil flow.

I have the same problem. There is an oil pressure switch? Or are you talking about the oil sensor sending unit?
