Is this a low idle? Help!

Hey guys and girls, I just bought a '95 Z w/ 44K on the clock and I noticed what I thought was a low idle in drive. The idle is around 550-600 in drive at a stop. I took my car to a local Chevy dealer and they used a diagnostic machine and they said that's where the idle should be. What do you all think? I still feel that is too low.

Thanks!

Your Chevy dealer is correct. 550 is the idle speed for an A4 in gear, 650 in neutral.

800, but stock tachs may show it as 900-1000.

thanks its clear now.. Another thing, is a option to raise the idle speed to get smoother idle?
(I don't like rough/lumpy idle ,so can I raise rpm ? Is this unhealthy for engine??)

Re: Is this a low idle? Help!

You can play with timing for a smoother idle. A higher idle won't hurt the engine, but will probably get annoying.

My camshaft will give definitaly a rough/lumpy idle..(237/245dur. 113lsa in 383cid) And for my setup I can't go smaller than this, if I get smaller cam it will not worth what I paid for whole engine.. So, to get a smoother dile only way is raise the idle speed I think right?

Or get it tuned on a dyno.
What kind of lift does the cam have?
That isn't that big of a cam for a 383.
Where is your idle now?

I have my m6 cc306 idle at 650.

Some say it sounds like ***, some say it sounds nice.
